The No. 24 Texas A&M women's golf team will be gunning for a berth in the NCAA Championships when it competes in the NCAA West Regional Thursday through Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.

Regional play will be contested May 6-8 at three sites – the West Regional at Stanford, the Central Regional at Columbus, Ind., and the East Region at Greenville, N.C. The top eight teams and two individuals advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall and hosted by UNC-Wilmington.

In addition to the Big 12 Champion Aggies, the strong field at the West Regional includes Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado State, Idaho, Iowa State, Louisiana State, Maryland, Ohio State, Oral Roberts, Penn, Portland State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford, Texas, Texas State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UNLV and Virginia.

“The teams that play smart and really think their way around this course will advance to the NCAA Championships,” said Aggie golf Trelle McCombs, who was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. “The challenge of this course is keeping the ball below the hole. If we do those things and keep the bogeys to a minimum then we will be in good shape.”
The 6,103-yard, par 71 Stanford Golf Course will be a formidable challenge for the Aggies.

“We did a lot of chipping practice during the round (on Wednesday) because this is a different type of grass than we're accustomed to,” McCombs said. “This course is not playing very long but it will require tee shots on the correct sides of the fairway to give you the best angles into the greens.”

The Aggies are coming off a win at the Big 12 Championships at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course in Norman, Okla., when they rallied from 11 shots down on the final day to nip second-round leader Oklahoma State by a single shot.

McCombs will field a lineup that includes seniors Julia Boland and Ashley Freeman, junior Sara Beth Davis and Chloe Garner. Boland, Zwartynski and Davis were named to the All-Big 12 Golf Team, and Boland was named the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year.
