The No. 24-ranked Texas A&M women's golf team shot a 299 and stands 10th in the team standings after the opening round of the NCAA West Regional on Thursday at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Big 12 Champion Aggies were 15-over par for the day and stand three shots out of eighth place. The top eight teams at the West Regional earn bids to the NCAA Championships. The Aggies are looking up at Virginia (+7), Arizona (+7), UCLA (+8), California (+8), Texas (+9), Alabama (+11), UNLV (+11), Ohio State (+12) and Stanford (+13).
“We played pretty smart golf on Thursday, but we lost some shots coming in and that hurt us,” Aggie golf coach Trelle McCombs said. “We are in good shape to make a move on Friday.”
The Aggies were led by senior Julia Boland and freshman Sarah Beth Davis, who both turned in rounds of one-over 72 and are tied for 13th in the individual standings. Senior Ashley Freeman shot a six-over 77 and is tied for 64th. Freshman Chloe Garner and junior Sarah Zwartynski both posted rounds of seven-over 78 and are tied for 77th.
Rounding out the team standings were Iowa State (+18), LSU (+18), UC Irvine (+18), San Jose State (+19), Colorado State (+20), UC Davis (+24), Arkansas (+24), Portland State (+24), San Francisco (+28), Idaho (+28), Pennsylvania (+29), Maryland (+31), Texas State (+32) and Oral Roberts (+34).
