The No. 24 Texas A&M women's golf team stands in a tie for 14th place after firing an opening round 297 at the 2010 NCAA Championships on Tuesday at the Country Club of Landfall.

        The Big 12 Champion Aggies were nine-over par for the day, and trail USC (-6), Purdue (-4), Arizona State (even), UCLA (even), Duke (even), Alabama (+1), Florida State (+1), TCU (+4), Auburn (+5), Virginia (+6), Oklahoma State (+7), Vanderbilt (+8) and Arizona (+8). The Aggies are tied Pepperdine and Tennessee at nine-over.

        The Aggies closed the opening round of action on a hot streak, playing the final five holes of the day in five-under par. A&M offset three bogeys with eight birdies to set the tone for Wednesday's action.

        “I'm so proud of the way the girls played,” Aggie head coach Julia Boland) and Z (junior Sarah Zwartynski) played like champs all day. As a team, our finish on the last five holes was outstanding. I'm so proud of that. I wish we could have played more holes.”

        The Aggies were led by Boland and Zwartynski, who turned in even-par rounds of 72 and are tied for 20th on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Sarah Beth Davis posted a 76 and is tied for 72nd at four-over. Senior Ashley Freeman contributed a 77 and is tied for 87th at five-over. Freshman Chloe Garner shot an 80 and is tied for 116th at eight-over.

        Rounding out the team standings was San Jose State (+10), Texas (+11), South Carolina (+12), Stanford (+12), Oregon (+14), New Mexico (+15), Kent State (+19) and Tulane (+23).

        The Aggies will be paired with TCU and Kent State in the second round, and will begin teeing off on the first hole at 12:26 p.m. (central).
