The No. 2-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team will begin its defense of the 2009 NCAA team championship on the Aggies' home course at the NCAA South Central Regional Thursday through Saturday at the Traditions Club Golf Course.

The Aggie will be paired with Texas Tech and Georgia in the opening round, and will begin teeing off at 8 a.m. on the first hole.

The NCAA South Central Regional is one of six golf regional championships that will determine the field at the NCAA Championships, which will be contested at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn., June 1-6, 2010. The top five teams and the low individual player not on those teams at the South Central Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships final site.

“We are really excited about this opportunity to host an NCAA regional on our home course,” Aggie golf coach J.T. Higgins said. “We know we will have to play well to advance, but it should help to play a course where we feel so comfortable.”

Joined the top-seed Aggies in the South Central Regional field are (by seed) Texas Tech, Georgia, North Florida, TCU, Pepperdine, Auburn, North Carolina, Baylor, Tulsa, Rice, Wichita State, Georgetown and Jackson State. Competing as individuals are: Oscar Zetterwall, New Orleans; Ken Looper, New Orleans; Philipp Fendt, Louisiana-Lafayette; Scott Kelly, Sam Houston State; and Jonathan Coleman, Grambling.

“I think our regional is the deepest of the six regionals with the most quality teams and players,” Higgins said. “ It should be a tremendous weekend of golf. Hopefully, lots of folks will come out to support the team and get us back to the finals to defend the national championship.”

Higgins will field a lineup that includes senior Andrea Pavan (Rome, Italy), sophomore Jordan Russell (College Station, Texas), junior Nacho Elvira (Santander, Spain), freshman Cameron Peck (Olympia, Wash.) and junior John Hurley (O'Neill, Neb.).

The other five NCAA regional sites are: The Course at Yale - New Haven, Connecticut; Capital City Club, Crabapple - Atlanta, Georgia; The Warren Golf Course - Notre Dame, Indiana; Carlton Oaks Golf Club - San Diego, California; Gold Mountain Golf Club - Bremerton, Washington.
