MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Final projections from Track & Field News prior to the start of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, next Wednesday have the Texas A&M women favored to defend their 2009 title by one point over the host Ducks. Florida is still favored for the men's title, but the gap in points has been trimmed from a dozen to just two points over A&M.
In the latest version of the magazine's formchart, following the NCAA preliminary rounds last weekend, Florida dropped a couple of points from 71 to 69 while the Aggies moved up eight points from 59 to 67. Oregon also moved up in point potential from 45 to 54.
Going into the final event of the meet, the 4 x 400 relay, T&FN projects the score to be Florida 61, Texas A&M 57, and Oregon 54. While the Aggies are predicted to win the relay, after finishing second the past three years, the Gators are tabbed for second place. Meanwhile, the Ducks will have to watch the final race as they didn't advance a relay.
On the women's side both Oregon and A&M lost points from the previous projections. With the Ducks dropping back nine points and the Aggies just six, it moved A&M ahead of Oregon by one point 61-60. Florida remains at third with 36 points, the same point projection they had in a previous formchart.
A false start in the 200 meters by Amber Purvis at the NCAA West region dropped the most points from Oregon while an injury to A&M hurdler Natasha Ruddock cut into the Aggies point potential.
After running an 11.18 in the 100 the stock of Porscha Lucas rose in the latest formchart as she went from 10th position to runner-up behind UTEP's Blessing Okagbare, the NCAA Indoor champ over 60 meters. Jeneba Tarmoh moved from 2nd to 5th.
The Aggie women are predicted to win a fourth consecutive national title in the 4 x 100 relay and are tabbed for second place in the 4 x 400 behind Arkansas, but in front of Oregon.
In the men's formchart Curtis Mitchell remains the favorite to win the 200, and he was added to the 100 field. Gerald Phiri is tabbed for 5th place in the 100 with Mtichell in 7th. Phiri is also predicted to score in the 200 in 6th place.
For the 400 meters Zuheir Sharif still in 2nd as Tyron Stewart moved into 3rd. Melvin Echard is on the edge of scoring potential as 9th in the triple jump.
