COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson captured the singles championship at the Women's ITA Summer Circuit held this weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The sophomore from Perth, Australia, lived up to her No. 1-seed billing in the 57-player field, winning every match in straight sets en route to the championship title. In the finals, Cuthbertson defeated No. 2 seed and University of Tennessee signee Millie Nichols, 6-2, 6-3.

After receiving a first-round bye, Cuthbertson began the tournament by defeating Samantha Siegel, 6-2, 6-2, in the Round of 32. Cuthbertson, who missed the Aggies' spring season with an injury, then disposed of Precious Gbadamosi, 6-1, 6-0, in the Round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, Cuthbertson topped Olivia Lewis, 6-3, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals, where she defeated No. 6 seed Anik Cepeda, 6-4, 6-3. Cepeda, an A&M Consolidated High School product, recently completed her freshman year at the College of William and Mary and was an all-conference selection in doubles.

Cepeda and Lewis won the women's doubles title.

The men's singles champion will be decided Monday at 9:30 a.m. as No. 7 seed Jonathan Chang of Rice University takes on No. 4 seed Danny Whitehead.

Whitehead knocked out A&M's Austin Klores (Franklin, Texas) in the quarterfinals. Aggie Alberto Bautista (McAllen, Texas) also was eliminated in the quarterfinals after falling to Robert Sajovich, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.

Bobby Cocanougher and Cory Kowal of Trinity University won the doubles championship, defeating Alex Hilliard of the University of Texas and Whitehead, 8-3.
