COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M head football coach Mike Sherman put the Aggie football team through the third practice of the season inside the McFerrin Athletic Center as the team donned shoulder pads for the first time.
              Â
"We put the shoulder pads on for the first time and we may have been a little too physical," Sherman said. "(Ryan) Swope took a helmet to the quad in the second to last play of the practice. We have to learn to play with our shoulder pads on and to protect each other. We do not have full pads on and it's important for the players to stay off of the ground so we don't get guys hurt."
              Â
Defensive lineman Jonathan Mathis was cleared to practice but has to undergo the regular acclimation period.
              Â
"We want to get him in the mix and part of the rotation," Sherman explained. "We recruited him to come in and play."
              Â
Coach Sherman announced that defensive linebacker Sean Porter (from Schertz, TX) underwent thumb surgery and missed today's practice, but will also miss additional time to attend the funeral of his grandmother.
              Â
The Aggies will work once on Thursday inside the McFerrin Athletic Center so that practice will not be open.
