COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Aggie football team worked out twice on Friday with full pads in the morning on the Coolidge grass practice fields and spent the afternoon session in the McFerrin Athletic Center in shorts and helmets.
               
"We have a great freshmen class and we have a lot of talent at positions where we need help" Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman said. "Hopeful (Nate) Askew (from San Antonio Madison High School) can return punts and be a fourth receiver for us, but he has had some injuries. Last year we played 18 (true) freshmen, I would be happy if we play nine and redshirted the rest. (Hutson) Prioleaux (redshirted last fall) looks so much further ahead than he was a year ago. I think this class is very attentive, very well coached coming in from the Texas high school coaches and they've adapted well to how we do things. Real proud of how we're practicing without pads on, they practice fast without pads. Their technique, speed, and footwork is still the same."
               
A couple of former outstanding A&M football players attended the afternoon workout. Fred Caldwell, a defensive lineman who lettered from 1980-82 and has been very active in the 12th Man Foundation  serving on the Board of Trustees as well as several committees, watched the action. Running back Greg Hill, who lettered in 1991-93 and was a first-round pick in the 1994 NFL draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, is still the third-leading rusher in Aggie history with 3,262 yards in his three-year career. He attended practice with members of his family.
               
The Aggies will scrimmage on Saturday and the start of practice has been moved up to 8:25 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. Gate 5 between Netum Steed and the first deck on the press box side of the stadium will be the lone entrance open. Reminder, no cell phones, video cameras or recording devices allowed.
