MIDLAND, Texas - Texas A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson and Christi Liles won their singles matches and teamed to also get a win in doubles on the first day of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas.
It was the fall season opener for the Aggies, who went 2-3 overall in singles and 1-0 in doubles.
Cuthbertson, a sophomore from Perth, Australia, who missed the spring season with an injury, had a first-round bye and then picked up a 6-3, 4-6, (10-6) victory against Stephanie Jasper of Boise State to advance to the Round of 16.
Cuthbertson will next face Dominique Harmath of Rice, who advanced with back-to-back straight-set wins in the first two rounds.
Liles, a senior from Largo, Fla., who also had a first-round bye, found herself trailing Lorena Aviles of Texas Tech in the second-round match before making a comeback that would springboard her into the Round of 16. Liles dropped her first set, 6-2, and was down 5-2 in the second set before rallying to win the set 7-6. Liles then won the tiebreaker, 10-4.
Liles will face No. 7 seed Patricia Veresova of Nebraska in the Round of 16 on Saturday.
Cuthbertson and Liles also got a win in doubles, defeating Janine Weinreich and Patricia Veresova of Nebraska, 8-5.
In other matches, senior Stephanie Davidson came up short in a 2-6, 6-2, (12-10) first-round singles loss to Amy Simidian of Penn State. Junior Sheri Olivier fell to Diana Negreanu of UTA, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round, and junior Lauren Santacroce, playing her first competition since having foot surgery in June, fell to Jaclyn Walker of Abilene Christian, 4-6, 7-6, (10-3).
