COSTA MESA, CA - Texas A&M's Austin Krajicek's run at the Costa Mesa Pro Classic held at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center in California ended on Saturday as the third seed in the tournament, Fritz Wolmarans, defeated Krajicek, 7-5, 6-4.
“In talking to Austin, he had some big points where he did not hold serve and seemed to be playing from behind a lot and against a very good player like Wolmarans that is very tough,” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “I thought Austin played extremely well to begin the fall schedule. He had some good wins against some top quality competition and what really impressed me was his ability to follow up a big win in the second round against the top seed, Fabrice Martin, with another victory over Kutrovsky in the quarterfinals. Kutrovsky and Austin have had some great matches in the past couple of years.”
Krajicek is a senior three-time NCAA All-American from Brandon, Florida, and is the top-ranked Big 12 tennis player in singles coming in ranked #12 overall in the pre-season ITA Tennis Rankings. Krajicek, the 2010 Co-Big 12 Player of the Year, posted a 19-7 record at the No. 1 position last spring.
After an opening round win against Spain's Luis-Antonio Perez-Perez in the field of 32, Krajicek disposed of the top seed, Fabrice Martin from France before taking out the sixth seed, Dimitar Kutrovsky, in the quarterfinals. Krajicek was the only non-seeded player to reach the semifinals.
Wolmarans, from South Africa, has reached as high as 297 in 2007 in the World Rankings.
Wolmarans, the third seed, will take on the fourth seed, Robbye Poole from the USA, in the finals. Poole defeated Daniel Garza from Mexico in the other semifinal today.
