WACO, Texas -With one week of practice under its belt, the Aggie men's tennis team headed to Waco to compete in the HEB Baylor Men's Invitational and the overall results were positive according to head coach Steve Denton.
“Overall, I am very pleased with our play this weekend,” Coach Denton said. “The guys reported back in good shape and you can tell the players have really worked on their games during the summer. I look at Colin Hoover who has really elevated his game. He and Jeff Dadamo competed against one another in the semifinals of the A draw and it was a very close match with a terrific tiebreaker in the first set for Jeff, followed by Colin winning the second set and then Jeff got off to a good start in the third set.”
“Jeff followed that match up with a tough match in the finals,” Denton added. “Almost identical to the previous match, after losing a tiebreaker in the first set Jeff bounced back and took the second set and was in position in the third before the tide turned.”
“In the A consolation draw, Niall Angus won by beating a good Baylor player in Sergio Ramirez in the semis and then followed up with perhaps his best match as an Aggie against Manzini from Texas Tech to win that portion of the draw, 6-2, 6-0,” Denton stated.
“It was good to get Austin Klores back on the courts after having back surgery and missing last season,” Denton explained. “I was pleased with Daniel Brown's first action as an Aggie in the B-draw and advancing to the semifinals.”
An area not as positive as the singles play was the play of the doubles.
“The doubles portion we did not play very well,” Denton explained. “We'll get back to campus and work on the fundamentals.”
For a team that is coming off of an overall record of 25-7 last spring, the second-most wins in school history, the Aggie men's tennis team has great competition that will help the team depth. The Aggies finished ranked #10 at the conclusion of the spring season, the best ranking since the 2001 squad finished that year ranked #7.
