IRVING, Texas - Texas A&M's Danielle Adams (Kansas City, Mo.) earned Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors by a media voting panel for games played from Jan. 18-24 on Monday.
It marked the first career honor for the 6-foot-1 forward/center who was tabbed preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year as a junior transfer from Jefferson (Mo.) College where Adams was the 2009 WBCA National Junior College Player of the Year. She is the second A&M player to receive weekly honors this season next to preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention Tanisha Smith on Dec. 7.
Adams led No. 9 Texas A&M to a 69-54 victory over Big 12 South rival Texas Tech on Jan. 23. She recorded her first career triple-double with a career-and game-high 27 points, career-high 12 rebounds and career-high 10 blocked shots against the Lady Raiders in her first league start of the season. Adams, who previously came off the bench in 12 games this year for the Aggies, became only the second A&M player in school history to accomplish such a feat next to former player Toccara Williams (2000-04) who recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in 2002. She is also the 10th all-time Big 12 player and third this season to record a triple-double on 15 occasions since the league's inception in 1996-97, joining Baylor's Brittney Griner and Iowa State's Alison Lacey.
It marked her fourth 20-point outing of her career as well as her second in the last three league games played versus Iowa State, Oklahoma and Tech. Her 10 blocks reset the Texas A&M single game and Reed Arena record formerly held by senior teammate Damitria Buchanan who had seven blocked shots versus Duke on Nov. 15, 2009.
For the game, Adams went 11-of-17 from the floor (64.7 percent) and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe (83.3 percent) in a career-best 35 minutes of action. She is currently on a nine-game double-digit scoring streak and has now led the team in scoring on eight occasions this year. Adams is averaging a team-high 19.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game in league play which ties her for third-best among Big 12 scoring leaders and fifth-best among rebounders.
