SPRING, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team launched six home runs and split a pair of games at the Spring Klein College Classic on Sunday falling to Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-4, before bouncing back with a 7-4 win over Galveston College.
Leading the way with the long ball was senior Rhi Kliesing who hit her second three-run home run of the weekend. Redshirt junior Eden Morris and freshmen Taran Tyler and Allison Garrett each hit solo homers as the Aggies moved to 5-1 in the fall season.
"Today was a day that we weren't our best, but it was good motivation for us in the offseason," said head coach Jo Evans. "It was a good day because we learned a lot about our team. Although we have the talent, we're not the team we need to be yet and we can continue to get better and to mature. The thing I liked was that all 21 of our players got to contribute to us winning games this weekend."
In A&M's first game of the day against Louisiana-Lafayette, the team jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of Kliesing's three-run long ball. That scored stuck until the Ragin' Cajuns closed within one run in the top of the sixth and came back to win with a six-run seventh. A&M managed to get one run back in the bottom of the final frame.
Sophomore Mel Dumezich (2-1) was saddled with the loss in the circle. She gave up seven runs on 15 hits, walked two and struck out eight.
Spittler led the offense going 2-for-3 with a home run while freshman Emily Albus also went 2-for-3 and added a run and a stolen base.
Texas A&M turned the tables and earned a come-from-behind win versus Galveston College in game two. Down 2-0, the Aggies used a three-run fourth inning to gain the lead. A&M remained ahead by adding a pair of runs in the fifth and seventh frames.
Kliesing picked up the win and moved to 3-0 in the circle this fall after allowing two runs on seven hits, walking two and fanning eight.
The Aggies hit four home runs in the game and Garrett was the only player with multiple hits going 2-for-2 with a homer.
Senior Andrea Tovar and freshman Amber Garza each added doubles on the day.
The Aggies return home and finish out their eight-game fall season with contests on Thursday, Oct. 7 against Blinn and Tuesday, Oct. 12 against McLennan. First pitch for both games is at 6 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
