Pacific Palisades, Calif. - Texas A&M's Nazari Urbina and Morgan Frank each earned straight-set victories in the first round of the qualifying singles bracket at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships on Tuesday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Urbina (pronounced nah-ZAR-ee ur-BEE-nah), a sophomore from Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ecaterina Vasenina of South Florida in the opening round. Urbina, ranked No. 33 in the ITA preseason rankings, will face No. 65 Alicia Aguilar of San Diego State in the second round.
Frank, an alternate who ended up receiving a late entry into the qualifying singles tournament, defeated Lutfiana Budiharto of Wichita State, 6-2, 6-2, to advance. A senior from Oldsmar, Fla., the 71st-ranked Frank concluded the match by dropping the first two games of the second set and then winning six consecutive games to defeat 36th-ranked Budiharto.
Frank will face Alex Cercone of Florida in the round of 32.
Second-round matches were slated to be played Tuesday afternoon, but rain caused the matches to be postponed until Wednesday, although there remains a chance of rain throughout Wednesday.
Urbina and Frank also are scheduled to compete in the main draw of doubles currently scheduled to begin on Thursday.
