OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Texas A&M senior Rachel Shipley was selected as one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, it was announced Thursday.
From Plano, Texas, Shipley was chosen by a national media committee from the list of 30 women's soccer candidates that were announced in August. She was the only finalist selected from a Big 12 institution.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Shipley, a finance major with a 3.675 grade point average, is a three-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 first team and was an NSCAA/adidas Women's College Scholar All-American last season. In her career, she had led the Aggies to a Big 12 Championship and three straight NCAA Tournament berths. She has earned numerous athletic achievements in her career, highlighted by an All-Big 12 first team honor, three weekly conference awards and three all-region honors. Shipley was already named to the 2010 MAC's Hermann Trophy Watch List, listed as a Soccer America Preseason All-American and was selected unanimously to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote via the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award website through November 14. Fan votes will be combined with media and coaches votes to determine the winner. Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winners during the 2010 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup championships in early December.
