Tennis fans, and especially Aggie tennis fans, will have an opportunity to watch many of the Texas A&M men's tennis team compete this weekend as the Aggies host the USTA/ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 23-26 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
The Aggies, fresh off of a Top 10 ranking last spring, return the majority of the team including All-Americans such as seniors Austin Krajicek (Brandon, FL) and Jeff Dadamo (Tampa, FL). Calon Alpar (Austin, TX), Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) and Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, TX) are three additional seniors who provide great experience and depth to the squad.
“I am excited about this year with this team,” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “We have a great deal of experience and competition among our team will make us even better. The support we receive from the 12th Man is second to none in collegiate tennis and it should be a great weekend of tennis. Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech all are Top 20 programs and many of their players will be here as well as some of the best from the Southwest Region. In fact, five of the Top 28 players in the country will be competing on our courts.”
Senior three-time All-American Krajicek is the top-ranked Big 12 tennis player in singles coming in ranked #12 overall. Krajicek, the Co-Big 12 Player of the Year last spring, posted a 19-7 record at the No. 1 position last spring.
Senior Dadamo posted an overall record of 18-9 last spring playing mainly on the #2 line. Dadamo, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 selection last spring, is ranked #22 in the preseason singles poll.
Senior Grigorov is ranked #120 in the singles poll. He compiled an overall mark of 21-5 in play last spring with a 14-5 mark in the #4 position which earned him the Big 12 No. 4 singles title.
In doubles, the dynamic duo of Krajicek and Dadamo are listed at #4. The pair compiled a mark of 19-9 in #1 doubles play last spring earning All-America honors.
The fourth Aggie to be listed is Niall Angus (London, England) who will be teamed with Grigorov and the duo is ranked #46 in the preseason listings. Angus teamed with several teammates in doubles action last spring,
