WACO, Texas - Three members of the Texas A&M women's tennis team have advanced to the Round of 32 of the singles draw at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional after winning opening round matches today at the Baylor Tennis Center and the Waco Regional Tennis Center.

A&M's Stephanie Davidson defeated Varsha Shiva-Shankar of Rice, 6-0, 6-7, 6-1, in the 128-player first round and then defeated Xlmena Fuentes of UT El Paso, 6-1, 6-2, to advance.

Aggies Nazari Urbina and Morgan Frank, seeded third and seventh, respectively, had first-round byes and then got picked up second-round wins to move on to the round of 32. Urbina came back to top Cierra Gaytan-Leach of Texas, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, and Frank posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Katarina Mlcochova of UT Arlington.

A&M's Lauren Santacroce earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brittany Tobi of Lamar in the opening round, but fell in the second to Jessica Kahts of Texas State, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Christi Liles also got a first-round victory but fell in the second round. The senior from Largo, Fla., defeated Leah Fried of Rice, 6-3, 6-0 and then fell to Sandra Dynka of Texas Tech, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

In other action, Sheri Olivier suffered a 6-1, 6-4 first-round loss to Nadia Lee of North Texas.

Round of 32 action gets underway Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The 64-team doubles play begins Saturday at 9 a.m. at Baylor. Davidson and Olivier face Marta Babanova and Idunn Herzberg of TCU at 10 a.m., and Frank and Santacroce meet Shiva Shankar and Fried of Rice at 10:15 a.m.

Urbina and Liles have a first-round bye and will open play at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Baylor.

The tournament continues through Oct. 26. The singles and doubles champions of the 12 regional sites advance to the UTSA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, to be held Nov. 4-7, at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
