WACO, Texas - Texas A&M's Nazari Urbina and Morgan Frank have advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and Urbina and partner Christi Liles have reached the quarterfinals in doubles at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Urbina, the No. 3 seed in singles, advanced to the Round of 16 with a default victory over Alina Shazhko of Stephen F. Austin and then qualified for the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory over Edyta Cieplucha of SMU.
Frank, the No. 7 seed, defeated Maggie Mello of Texas, 6-1, 6-3 in the Round of 32. Frank then topped Daniella Trigo of Rice, 6-2, 6-0, to qualify for the quarterfinals.
Urbina will face No. 6 seed Rebekka Hanle of Rice Monday at 9 a.m., and Frank will take on No. 2 seed Marta Lesniak of SMU also at 9 a.m.
In doubles, Urbina and Liles defeated Mirna Cicak and Stefania Nicolai of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 8-1, in the round of 16 to reach the quarterfinal. The Aggie duo will take on No. 3 seed Sona Navakova and Nina Secerbegovic of Baylor Monday at 10:30 a.m.
In other action today, A&M's Stephanie Davidson reached the Round of 32 in singles before falling to Shahzoda Hatamova of SMU, 6-2, 6-1.
A&M's Sheri Olivier won two matches in the singles consolation bracket to advance to the quarterfinals. The junior from Topeka, Kan., defeated Helene Czudek of Lamar, 7-6 (6), 6-0, and then dropped Varahsa Shiva Shankar of Rice, 6-3, 6-3.
Olivier and Davidson also advanced to the quarterfinals in the doubles consolation bracket, defeating Caroline Dedering and Micaela Silva of Texas-San Antonio, 8-2.
Next round action begins Monday, and the championship matches are slated for Tuesday. The singles and doubles champions of the 12 regional sites advance to the UTSA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, to be held Nov. 4-7, at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
