COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior infielder Matt Juengel collected three hits and drove in a run to lift the Farmers to a 4-2 victory over the Plowboys Tuesday during the opening game of the Texas A&M Baseball Fall World Series at Olsen Field.
Trailing 1-0 when they came to bat in the bottom of the third, the Farmers led off the inning with consecutive hits from sophomore outfielder Tyler Naquin and Juengel. After a failed pick-off attempt moved the runners to second and third, junior infielder Adam Smith plated the Farmers' first run of the day with an RBI groundout. Junegel came home with a second run later in the inning on a sac fly off the bat off sophomore outfielder Brandon Wood.
During the bottom of the fifth, the Farmers were able to push across a third run as senior infielder Andrew Collazo collected a one-out single and scored later in the frame on a Plowboy error.
Juengel plated the Farmers' fourth run of the afternoon with a RBI double in the bottom of the eighth.
The Plowboys attempted to rally with back-to-back hits to begin the top of the ninth and later scored on a bases-loaded walk, but redshirt freshman Parker Ray got the final two outs of the frame to record the save and preserve the Farmers' win.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Dylan Mendoza tossed 5.2 innings to pick up the victory for the Farmers. The Lake Travis, Texas, native struck out eight while limiting the Plowboys to just a single run on seven hits.
Junior pitcher/infielder John Stilson went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Plowboys, while Jacob House and Steve Martin each chipped in with a pair of hits in the losing effort.
