CHARLESTON, S.C. - Former Texas A&M standouts Bobby Gates and Martin Piller will earn their PGA Tour cards for the 2011 season after competing in this weekend's Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island.
"We are so proud and excited for both Bobby and Martin," A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "Their abilities in golf have always been obvious since they came to school together as freshmen just six years ago, but they are even better men and great representatives of Texas A&M and our golf program."
Tour players have been in a season-long quest to finish among "The 25" leading money winners, which ensure PGA Tour cards for next year.
Both Gates and Piller have locked up top-25 finishes after strong Nationwide Tour seasons. Gates currently ranks 15th on the money-winner list with nearly $245,000 of earnings this year. Piller, meanwhile, ranks sixth with over $325,000.
The duo were four-year letterwinners for the Aggies from 2005-2008, not only entering school at the same time but rooming together for a while at Texas A&M. Gates and Piller helped lead the team to three NCAA Championship berths and laying the foundation for the program's national championship one year later.
"Martin and Bobby helped build Aggie golf into a championship program," Higgins said. "We are grateful for everything they've done for us and they deserve all the successes that come their way. We know how hard they've worked to make their dreams come true and we couldn't be happier for them."
The Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island will air live on Golf Channel Thursday through Sunday from 1-3:30 p.m. CT. Check local listings for station information.
