COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Former Texas A&M softball standout Erin Glasco accepted a position as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University, the team announced Tuesday.
The Johnston City, Ill., native will join SIU head coach Kerri Blaylock and associate head coach Jen Sewell in Carbondale working with the Saluki softball team in the Missouri Valley Conference.
"I am excited for Erin to begin her collegiate coaching career at SIU," Texas A&M head coach Jo Evans said. "Coach Blaylock and her staff do a great job and Erin will certainly learn a lot from them and will develop into a great coach. Erin was an integral part of our success in 2008 when we played in the National Championship Series. It was great having her spend her fifth year with our program as a student assistant and I'm sure the experience will help her transition into her coaching career. Erin was a great Aggie and it will be fun to watch her coaching in a such a successful program."
Glasco entered the Aggie softball roster as a junior in 2008 after playing for two years at Notre Dame as a designated player and catcher. She helped the Irish to the 2006 NCAA Tournament, and started in 39 games in 2007.
"I am so excited to welcome Erin to our staff," Blaylock said. "We set out to hire a quality individual and I feel we have done that as someone who was an outstanding athlete that has Women's College World Series (WCWS) experience and is now a promising young coach. Erin comes from a great softball family and has played for an outstanding coach at Texas A&M and we will definitely use her knowledge of recruiting not only in the Midwest but also in Texas."
At A&M Glasco started behind the plate in nearly every scheduled competition, recording a .278 career batting average with 88 hits, 21 doubles, six home runs, and 58 RBIs. In her first year at A&M, the Aggies finished the season with a national runner-up title at the WCWS. Glasco earned Big 12 All-Tournament honors, helping A&M to both the regular season conference title and the Big 12 Tournament trophy.
As a co-captain in 2009 Glasco had a team-best .479 on base percentage and a team-best .316 batting average. She was named to the All-Big 12 first team and the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Central All-Region team.
Glasco saw playing time in professional softball, with the USSSA Pride of the National Pro Fastpitch in 2009, and with the Sharx in Austria in 2010. She most-recently worked with Aggie softball as a student assistant while finishing her degree in business management in May of 2010.
"I'm really excited to be back in southern Illinois and to have an impact on where I grew up," Glasco said.
Glasco's older sister, Tara, played softball at SIU from 2001-03. Her father, Gerry, is an assistant coach at the University of Georgia.
