COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M softball team came away with a 4-0 shutout of Blinn College on Thursday evening at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The win improved the Aggies to 6-1 this fall and the team plays its final game against McLennan on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 6 p.m.
"I'm happy we came out with a win tonight," said head coach Jo Evans. "Our focus was to improve our approach at the plate from last weekend and I thought, for the most part, we did that. We got more aggressive as the game went on and we settled in with our pitch selection. Mel (Dumezich) recognized that they were aggressive hitters and did a nice job of keeping the ball off the plate. I'm pleased to see the way our freshmen are coming along and our outfield did a really good job tonight. It's nice to see the things we've been working on in practice come through and help us win games."
Thursday's contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when three consecutive hits put the Aggies on the scoreboard. Sophomore transfer Lauren Schwirtlich. Freshman Emily Albus then drove in a speedy Schwritlich from second with an infield single to get the Aggies ahead 2-0.
Redshirt junior Lindsey Sisk led off the bottom of the fifth by drawing a walk and sophomore Sydney Shannon reached base via a hit by pitch. Dumezich then laced a two-run, line-drive double to left center to help her cause in the circle and put A&M up 4-0.
Dumezich (3-1) earned the complete-game shutout by allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out eight.
A&M was in control of all assets of the game, outhitting Blinn, 7-3, and holding strong defensively with diving catches in the outfield by junior Kelsea Orsak and senior Andrea Tovar.
Also tallying hits for the Aggies were sophomore Meagan May and freshman Cassie Tysarcyzk with doubles and freshman Taran Tyler with a single.
After their game with McLennan on Oct. 12, the Aggies close out the fall with the annual Maroon & White Series Oct. 19-21.
