COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M men's tennis coach Steve Denton has inked Jackson Withrow, a Top 10 national recruit and the three-time Class A No. 1 singles state champion from Omaha, Nebraska, to a national letter of intent.
"We are extremely excited that Jackson chose Texas A&M and that he is finishing high school early to come join us in January," Coach Denton said. "Jackson is a very good athlete that has a very effective all-court game which will add great depth for us in singles and doubles. What excites me most is the fact that every time we have watched him play, he has shown tremendous improvement which shows his potential. Jackson has all of the intangibles for success. He is a fierce competitor, has great intellect and fantastic leadership qualities. He will fit in perfectly on our team as we continue to build on our Top 10 finish last season."
Withrow, who attends Burke High School in Omaha where he is a member of the Junior National Honor Society, will graduate this December and enroll at Texas A&M in January. Withrow played at the Rick Faust Tennis Academy in Omaha. He was recruited by Nebraska, Oklahoma, Florida State, UCLA, Washington, Alabama and Penn State. He took official visits to Oklahoma, Florida State, UCLA and Texas A&M.
"I am very excited and I know I've made the right decision," Withrow said. "I am looking forward to the next four years of my life in College Station. Coach (Steve) Denton and Coach (Bob) McKinley are two great coaches. They really know the game of tennis and I am excited to be part of the Aggie program. I know they have a lot of great guys on the team and there is competition all of the time. It feels like a big family. I know I can trust the coaches and the guys and I feel like I can continue to improve. They also have a lot of great support for the tennis program."
Withrow, the son of Jay and Deb Withrow of Omaha, is the No. 10 blue chip recruit in the country according to tennisrecruiting.net and is the seventh-ranked junior player in the United States. He advanced to the round of 16 at the USTA 18s national summer championships played in August in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
"He's going to a big-time tennis program, and I know he'll do fine," said Withrow's coach, Rick Faust. "Obviously it will challenge him, but that's what he needs.
"As far as his potential, I think Jackson has only tapped the tip of the iceberg."
Withrow, born July 7, 1993, has risen as high as #9 nationally and has an overall record of 74-14 including a 16-11 mark against other Blue Chip recruits and a 25-1 record against 5-Star recruits. In high school play, he has a record of 94-1 and is the team captain.
The Aggies finished the 2010 season ranked #10 in the country and reached the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Championships in Georgia. The team had an outstanding fall climaxed by the doubles tandem of senior All-Americans Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo winning the USTA ITA National Indoor Championships in New York last weekend.
