SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Texas A&M women's golf team scored its second consecutive under-300 round to close out the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas in second place.
After posting a season low 286 in the second round of the tournament, the Aggies shot a 298 in windy conditions to finish with a three-round score of 880.
A&M finished highest out of five schools representing the Big 12 conference and was just three strokes behind tournament winner Texas Christian University.
"We charged pretty well and gave ourselves a chance," A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. "It was a tough day conditions-wise and TCU didn't handle the wind as they had been, so that gave us an opening."
McCombs said that the Aggies knew the windy conditions could give the team an advantage over the rest of the field.
"We were extremely prepared for the wind," McCombs said. "We like it and we can handle it. We gave back a few shots down the stretch, but all in all it was a good day for us."
A&M finished in front of Notre Dame (882), Colorado (883), Tulane (884), UTSA (891), Baylor (897), Tulsa (903), Wisconsin (908), Nebraska (914), Central Arkansas (927), Southern Methodist (932), Central Florida (934) and Kansas State (936).
Four of the Aggie golfers finished in the Top-20 individual standings, with TCU being the only other school in the tournament to do so.
Sophomore Sarah Beth Davis finished the day with a 3-over 75 and finished with a three-round score of 219, tied for seventh overall individually.
The Alamo Invitational marks the last tournament on the Aggies' fall schedule, as A&M will not compete again until Feb. 21, 2011, when the team travels to Parrish, Fla., to compete in Central District Invitational.
"Overall, it was a successful fall season," McCombs said. "We learned a lot about the team. We learned about how they react to pressure, how they practice. We're a young team and so it was good to spend some quality individual time with them, and I think it will pay off down the road."Â
