Results
After building a sizable two-day lead, the Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team had another strong day to finish in first place in the Georgia Tech Invitational at Atlanta, GA.
The Aggies finished with a three-day score of 1,735.5 points, nearly 700 points ahead of second place Florida State, which scored 1,045.5 points. Rounding out the team finishes were Florida (939), Miami (519), North Carolina State (333), Georgia Tech (280), Clemson (265), Florida Gulf Coast (244), Michigan State (224), Florida Atlantic (192), Gardner-Webb (136), Air Force (122) and Auburn (113).
A&M tallied another five wins on the day and registered 14 NCAA "B" cuts in individual swims. Sophomore Maureen McLaine took first in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:19.36, freshman Breeja Larson touched first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.38) and junior Rita Medrano took first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.04). Each of the swims were season bests for the Aggies.
The A&M foursome of Maria Sommer, Meagan Hairston, Hannah Kinder and Lili Ibanez lowered the Aggies' season best in the 400-freestyle relay with a "B" cut 3:19.51 finish.
The Aggies also had a pair of divers compete in the platform diving event. Junior Janie Potvin took first in the event, scoring a 327.90, qualifying easily for the NCAA Zone meet and narrowly missing her own school record mark of 333.65. Junior Lorena Lujan also qualified for the zone meet with a sixth place finish 247.30.
The Aggies will take to the pool again on Dec. 4, when the team travels to Houston on Dec. 4 to face off against the Rice Owls.
