COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M student body, better known as the 12th Man, has applied for a new Guinness World Record with officially 30,467 students scanning to enter the Nov. 20 football game against the University of Nebraska. The Aggies won the game, 9-6, before an overall and record crowd of 90,079 at Kyle Field in College Station. A national record 31,005 students pulled tickets for the event.
"The 12th Man continues to amaze me," Director of Athletics Bill Byrne said. "I have been around collegiate athletics for more years than I care to mention. There has never been an atmosphere that can compare to that magical night at Kyle Field. The energy inside the stadium was unbelievable and the support was crucial for our football team. We know the student crowd was the best in college football history and I am certain they were the loudest."
"Throughout this season I have demanded a fanatical effort from our players and coaches," Aggie head football coach Mike Sherman said. "I asked the 12th Man for that same kind of effort against Nebraska and did they ever respond. It began at Midnight Yell Practice and continued throughout the game on Saturday. They are a huge part of our success. There is no question that we have the best student section in all of college football and I am very thankful for their support."
After the personnel with the Guinness World Records verify all of the data, a certificate of a "World Record" will be issued to Texas A&M University.
The Aggie football team will face the Texas Longhorns in a nationally televised game on ESPN with kick scheduled for 7:06 p.m. in Austin on Thanksgiving night (Nov. 25).
