One of the most hotly contested rivalries in collegiate swimming and diving will be renewed when the Texas A&M men's team hosts SMU in a 2:30 p.m. dual meet on Saturday at the Student Recreation Natatorium. The dual will take place between the morning and evening sessions of the Gulf Senior Championships, which are also be contested at the Rec.
The Aggies and Mustangs have faced off over 60 times in the longtime series that dates back to the 1930s. The last two meetings have come down to the final relay and were decided by a single point. Last year's meeting was won by the Aggies when they finished first and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay that gave A&M a 119-118 final advantage. The 2009-10 A&M-SMU meet was named the Most Exciting Competition by the College Swimming Awards after the season.
"We always seem to have a great meet with SMU," Aggie head coach Eric Sehn.
The Aggies' performance in Florida and Georgia allowed them to sweep the Big 12 Men's Swimming and Diving weekly honors. Nel was named Big 12 Diver of the Week after posting double wins against Florida Atlantic, Indian River and Nova Southeastern and at the Georgia Tech Invitational. True freshman Kyle Troskot claimed five first-place finishes, including three in individual races, during the Aggies' Florida road swing.
