ROUEN, FRANCE - Texas A&M senior All-American Austin Krajicek (pronounced CRY-check) had an excellent international competition helping the American collegiate squad advance to the finals of the fifth annual Master'U BNP Paribas, an international collegiate competition that was held last weekend in Rouen, France. The eight teams included eventual champion and host France, the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, China, Ireland and Switzerland.
This marked the second year for three-time All-American Krajicek, from Brandon, Florida, to compete in this international field. He had two wins in the semifinal match with Germany as he won his singles match against Germany's Christopher Koderisch, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2 and then teamed with Reid Carleton of Duke to knock off Sebastian Schulz and Tobias Hinzmann in men's doubles. USA won the overall match, 4-2.
The championship was a rematch of last year's final when USA defeated France, but this year the French won the championship, 5-1.
The USA squad swept Ireland in a first-round match, 7-0. Krajicek teamed with Carleton to win the men's doubles match in straight sets.
The teams competed in a best-of-seven format consisting of two men's and two women's singles matches, one men's and one women's doubles match, along with one mixed doubles match.
The United States team was coached by Greg Patton, the head coach of the Boise State University men's tennis team, and Mark Guilbeau, the head women's tennis coach at the University of Virginia. Patton helped lead the Americans to the 2009 crown. The roster spots were selected by a committee of USTA Player Development and coaches and staff from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
