
Pavan Wins Title in Hawaii; Aggies Finish Second

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - Texas A&M senior Andrea Pavan closed with a seven-under-par 65 on Friday to win the individual title at the John Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course.
The No. 5-ranked Aggies lost a playoff for the team championship to No. 23 UNLV when the Rebels' Brett Kanda chipped in for birdie on the first playoff hole.
A&M shot 12-under in the final round to finish at 28-under for the tournament. Pavan's 12-under 70-69-65=204 was two strokes better than runner-up Derek Ernst of UNLV (68-69-69=206).
Pavan is the second Aggie to capture an individual tournament title this season. John Hurley won the Lone Star Invitational in the fall.
A&M freshman Cameron Peck tied for sixth (71-67-71=209), sophomore Jordan Russell tied for 11th (71-71-69=211), junior Nacho Elvira tied for 21st (73-68-74=215) and sophomore Geoff Shaw tied for 25th (73-72-71=216). Freshman Case Cochran, playing as an individual, tied for 29th (75-68-74=217).
"Our guys played their tails off today and I couldn't be prouder of them," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "We came up a little short and got beat by a great shot. Andrea had a fantastic day and I'm really proud of him for getting the individual win. All our guys were very competitive. It's going to be an exciting year for us."
BYU and California tied for third at 16-under, followed by New Mexico (-11), Arizona (-10), Fresno State (-9), SMU (-9), Nevada (+2), Denver (+11), UC Santa Barbara (+15), UTEP (+24), Hawaii (+28), Hawaii Pacific (+41) and BYU-Hawaii (+58).
The Aggies are back in action at the Southern Highlands Collegiate March 12-14 in Las Vegas, Nev.
