COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 18th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team ran its home win streak to five matches with a 6-1 win over Lamar in the first of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon before 274 fans at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies will face No. 24 Pepperdine in the nightcap tonight at 6 p.m.
A&M (9-4) claimed a tight doubles point to take the early lead, then clinched the overall victory with three consecutive singles wins in straight sets. The loss dropped the Cardinals back to 9-5.
"I was not pleased today with our overall effort," A&M coach Steve Denton said. "I didn't think we came out with fire, and I thought that we really struggled today in the doubles. After doubles, we stepped it up, and I was really pleased with our individual efforts."
The ninth-ranked duo of Marcus Lunt finished off a 9-7 win at No. 2 to give their team the point.
Lunt pushed the score to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Dusan Savkovic at No. 4, and sophomore Colin Hoover followed quickly with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ermilov on the third line.
Playing at No. 1 singles, freshman Alberto Bautista clinched the overall match for the Aggies with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Richard Filkuka. Junior Calon Alpar (6-2, 6-2 at No. 5) and sophomore John Lewis (6-4, 6-4 at No. 2) rounded out the scoring for Texas A&M.
"It is really good for us to let these other guys play," Denton said. "It keeps them dialed in to what we are doing, and lets us evaluate them to see if they are ready to come into the lineup. When they play matches like they did today, it helps them to be ready. When you are just practicing and don't have goals, it is much more difficult, so these matches are very important for our success this season because our depth is really important for us with the amount of tough matches we have this season."
A&M and Pepperdine (6-7) will square off at 6 p.m. Live video and live scoring for the match will be available on www.AggieAthletics.com. Tickets can be purchased online at www.12thManFoundation.com, by calling the ticket office at 1-888-99-AGGIE or at the Mitchell Tennis Center ticket office.
