MARANA, Ariz. - No. 12 seed Colorado State upset No. 3 seed Texas A&M, 3-2, on Tuesday to claim third place at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship.
A&M got individual match victories from Andrea Pavan (3 and 2 over Riley Arp) and Conrad Shindler (1 up over Zahkai Brown). Nacho Elvira's match against Dustin Morris went three extra holes before Morris prevailed.
Jordan Russell was defeated by Ryan Peterson (3 and 1) and Cameron Peck lost to Bryce Hanstad (4 and 3).
"Today was another great match," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "As the defending NCAA champion, our team is finding out what it's like to wear a target on their back. Every team we play seems to elevate their game against us. Colorado State played outstanding golf and we fought them to the end. Conrad birdied four of his last five holes to win his match and Nacho's match went three extra holes before he lost. His opponent made some unbelievable par saves and long birdie putts. We came up a little short but I know this experience will pay off for us in the postseason."
No. 15 seed New Mexico defeated No. 8 Southern California, 3-2, in the championship match.
The No. 4-ranked Aggies are back in action at the Linger Longer Invitational starting on Friday in Greensboro, Ga.
