COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M women's volleyball team concluded its spring exhibition season with a scrimmage against the Texas A&M men's national championship club team at the Reed Arena practice gym.
With the net set at the women's height (7 feet, 4 1/8 inches), approximately eight inches lower than the men's regulation height, the men's team won all four sets, 25-15, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16.
"The guys were hitting off a women's net and were told to compete to win," A&M women's coach Laurie Corbelli said. "We needed that. A lot of the teams we will see play like they do and we need to be able to beat them, so we have a lot of work to do.
"The overall positives are that we got a good look at the team and know that we have our work cut out for us as far as the areas of the game that we don't understand: where they are supposed to be, what they are supposed to do. We started slowly, and we need to increase the intensity from the beginning. The team realized it and pointed it out themselves, and that is half the battle, them understanding what they need to do and what changes need to be made.
"This was very, very beneficial for us, and we take a lot from this. I let the team know they needed to increase their intensity and energy at first and their communication on the court, and that is one of the last things that comes together when you are a new group. By game 3, the score reflected that. We had more energy and they felt more comfortable together. It was 25-23 and our game started to resemble what we could do."
The Aggies conclude spring drills on Thursday. Two-a-days for the fall season begin on August 9, and the first match of the 2010 season is August 28.
