COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 12th-ranked Texas A&M men's tennis team blanked UTSA, 4-0, to claim its 10th-straight victory of the season on Monday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies (17-4) handed the Roadrunners (11-7) their first loss in the last seven matches. Four players helped A&M clinch the match victory including junior Alexey Grigorov (Moscow, Russia) who won his ninth-straight by a 6-2, 6-3 count versus UTSA's top player Rodrigo Morgado at No. 1 singles.
Senior co-captain Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore John Lewis (Birmingham, Ala.) also contributed to the winning cause with a pair of straight-set victories at the No. 4 and No. 5 lines respectively. Lunt defeated Max Stratmann, 6-2, 6-2, while Lewis downed Daniel Moreiras, 6-2, 6-1, to remain an undefeated 5-0 on the season.
Junior Calon Alpar (Austin, Texas) closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Jorge Delgado at No. 6.
"Our players did a pretty good job of adjusting to the late start," said Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton on the original start time of noon being moved up to 1:30 p.m. due to travel by UTSA. "We've been through some adversity this year. Our guys are doing pretty well handling different things - schedule changes, weather and other adversities. They were able to come out and not let it affect them. It probably affected UTSA more than it did us."
The Aggies will have a quick turnaround as they face No. 36 Notre Dame tonight at 6 p.m. (CT) at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
