The No. 4 Texas A&M men's golf team closed with the second-best score of the day to finish third at the Morris Williams Invitational on Tuesday at the University of Texas Golf Club.
The Aggies fired a seven-over par 291 to finish the tournament at 31-over, which wasn't enough to hold off surging Georgia or catch faltering Texas down the stretch. The Bulldogs posted an even-par score of 284 to grab the team championship (+26), while the Longhorns held on to second (+27) with a 16-over 300 on Tuesday. For the tournament, the Aggies carded rounds of 298-287-291 and were one of only three teams to post three sub-300 scores.
"What a terrific team effort to battle back from a poor start," Aggie head golf coach J.T. Higgins said. " We had a great round today in the wind and I was proud of the fight we showed throughout the tournament. This team never quits."
A pair of Aggies were under par in the final round with senior Andrea Pavan firing a one-under 70 and junior John Hurley posting a two-under 69. Pavan was A&M's low finisher at a tie for second at four-over with rounds of 73-74-70=217, while Hurley's strong finish saw him surge from 61st place to a tie for 23rd at 11-over (77-78-69=224).
"John and Andrea were incredible today," Higgins said. "Being under par in those conditions was pretty spectacular. Overall it was another strong showing despite not being at our best so I feel really good about where we are heading."
Sophomore Jordan Russell finished with a 73 to climb 11 spots to a tie for 21st at 10-over (75-75-73=223). Freshman Cameron Peck finished in a tie for 32nd place at 13-over (75-72-79=226). Junior Nacho Elvira placed in a tie for 37th at 14-over (75-73-79=227). Playing as an individual, junior Conrad Shindler finished in a tie for eighth at seven-over (73-72-75=220).
