COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M baseball team renews an old Southwest Conference rivalry on Tuesday when the Aggies hit the road to battle Houston. First pitch at Cougar Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
A&M (28-18-1) has won eight of its last 12 games and is coming off a series win over Dallas Baptist at Olsen Field. Over that stretch, the Aggies have hit .300, posted a 3.00 ERA, held opposing hitters to a .220 average and fielded at a .968 clip. Texas A&M, which plays four road games this week, has won three of its last four away from Olsen Field and sits in sixth place in the Big 12 at 9-11-1.
The Cougars, meanwhile, enter the game with a 20-26 overall record and are tied for seventh in Conference USA at 7-11. U of H has won three of its last five, but dropped a C-USA series at home over the weekend to Tulane. Houston hits at a .290 clip, scores an average of 6.1 runs per game and sports a 6.12 team ERA.
The Aggies lead the all-time series, which dates back to 1946, 107-54-1. A&M has won nine of the last 12, and the teams split a pair of meetings last season. Tuesday's game will mark the 163rd meeting between the longtime SWC rivals, making it the fifth-most played series in Aggie baseball history.
Freshman Michael Wacha (5-2, 2.47 ERA) will get the start and will face Cougar senior right-hander Barry Laird (1-0, 8.59). Fans can contact the University of Houston ticket office for availability at 713-GO-COOGS or online at uhcougars.com. WTAW-AM 1620 will carry the broadcast locally, which will also air worldwide on radioaggieland.com.
