COLLEGE STATION - Susan Kines Langston, 43, the daughter of former Texas A&M assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Kines, was killed in an automobile accident Monday, June 28 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His two grandsons, Matthew and Joshua, were injured in the crash as well.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe and his wife, Rubye, and their entire family from the Aggie football team, the Texas A&M athletic department and the entire Aggie Network," Aggie head football coach Mike Sherman said.
Kines had served four years (2003-06) as the Alabama assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He was the Crimson Tide interim head coach from the end of the 2006 regular season through the Independence Bowl.
Kines had also served on coaching staffs at Florida State, Georgia, Arkansas, Florida, Clemson and Jacksonville State. He also served four years in the NFL working with the Tampa Bay Buccaneer linebackers from 1987-90.
Kines played collegiate football at Jacksonville State and he was a three-year letterman from 1963-65. After coaching on the high school level, he returned to his alma mater to complete work on a master's degree and serve as a graduate assistant in 1972-73. He earned the title of defensive coordinator and assistant head coach through the 1976 season.

A note from Kirby Smart, Defensive Coordinator at the University of Alabama:
Dear Coaches, Former Players, and Friends of Coach Joe Kines,
As most of you know, Coach Joe Kines' daughter, Susan Kines Langston, was tragically killed in a head-on collision in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on Monday, June 28th. Her two sons, 7-year old Josh and 14-year old Matthew, were in the car as well and were airlifted to Children's Hospital in Birmingham for treatment. As of today (June 30th), the boys are doing well. Susan's husband, Keith Langston, is a high school football coach at Northridge High School in Tuscaloosa.
Coach Kines has positively impacted a tremendous amount of lives, including mine, in his coaching career. Susan was his and Rubye's only child. Coach Kines and Rubye are now retired and living in Tuscaloosa watching their two grandsons grow up. With this letter I am asking that if Coach Kines has impacted your life in any way, please consider returning the favor by helping support his grandchildren during this horrible tragedy.
You can help by contributing to the Keith Langston for Benefit of Susan Kines Langston Fund. All checks should be payable to the named fund above and sent directly to:
Bank of Tuscaloosa

Please take this fund into consideration. The names of all contributors will be sent to the Kines family.
So many of us involved in football -- both as players and coaches -- were influenced by Coach Kines. Now, we can help him and his grandkids, who will now be raised solely by their father.
