No. 11 Miami got three home runs from Scott Lawson and scored 10 times in the first four innings en route to a 14-1 victory over No. 20 Texas A&M Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Coral Gables Regional before 2,712 fans at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The Hurricanes (42-17) scored 10 of their 14 runs with two outs to advance to the regional championship game on Sunday at 3 p.m. (central). The Aggies (41-20-1) will face No. 4-seed Dartmouth (27-18) in an elimination game at 11 a.m. (central), with the winner advancing to face UM.
"I don't know if Miami could have played a better game today," A&M coach Rob Childress said. "They did a great job in all facets. It started for them on the mound--I thought Chris Hernandez was as good as we've seen all year and made pitches when he had to make them. He didn't have to do that very often. Their lineup is very good, they don't stop coming at you, and they put pressure on you with their speed. Out of the 14 runs we gave up today, 10 came with two outs. They got the hits when it mattered most."
Lawson hit solo home runs in his first two at-bats, in the first and third innings, then added a three-run shot in the fifth. Miami scored in each of the first five innings, riding Lawson's day at the plate and adding a three-run home run off the bat of Chris Pelaez with two outs in the fourth.
Brodie Greene, who finished the day with two hits, knocked in A&M's lone run with his 100th hit of the season in the eighth.
Aggie starter Ross Stripling (6-4) allowed eight hits and six runs over three innings of work. He walked two and fanned five.
Miami's Chris Hernandez (9-3) got the win, allowing three hits and a walk over six shutout innings. He struck out seven batters.
The game was delayed for nearly two and a half hours by a heavy rain storm in the middle of the seventh inning.
Senior Clayton Ehlert (4-6) will get the start against the Big Green in Sunday's contest, which will air nationally on ESPNU HD. It will be the first meeting between the two schools on the baseball diamond.
"Well, we had a bad day today, and we can't have another one of these," Childress said. "Tomorrow, we play a Dartmouth team who's played extremely well the last two days. They've been very offensive for a team that hasn't played since May 17. They've come out and swung the bats really well against two very good teams. They went through a lot of pitching, and I feel like we've got some guys lined up on the mound who are rested and ready to go."
