DeRuyter's Defense
FIU became the first team to rush for over 100 yards against the Aggies this season with 115 yards on 39 carries, but first-year defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter's defense still shined overall by limiting the Golden Panthers to just 232 total yards on 72 plays (3.2 yards/play). FIU could muster just 117 yards through the air and Panther passer Wes Carroll managed just 14-of-34 passing. The 117 yards were the fewest allowed by the Aggies since UAB threw for just 74 yards against A&M last year. The Aggie defense also sewed up the game by stonewalling the FIU offense on four plays inside the A&M 8-yard line in the waning minutes.
Another Century Game for C-Mike
Sophomore running back Christine Michael hit the century mark in rushing yards for the third straight game with 119 yards on 21 carries. Michael is the first Aggie to post three straight 100-yard rushing games since 1998 when Danté Hall did it against Kansas (36-177), Nebraska (32-113) and Baylor (17-137).
• The Aggies beat FIU 27-20 despite committing five turnovers. It marks the first time A&M has won while allowing that many turnovers since giving up six turnovers in a 56-14 win over Middle Tennessee State in 1995.
• The interception on A&M's first offensive play of the second half was the Aggies' first of 2010. Quarterback Jerrod Johnson had thrown 93 passes without a pickoff in 2010 and 108 passes dating back to 2009 until FIU's Ashlyn Parker grabbed the deflected pass. Johnson finished the game with four interceptions, which came on consecutive A&M offensive series.
• The 32-yard rush by FIU's Kedric Rhodes on the final play of the first half was the longest rush allowed by the Aggies this season. The previous long rush was a 16-yarder by Romonte Hampton of Stephen F. Austin.
• FIU's six quarterback sacks were the most since Kansas State had six against the Aggies in last year's 62-14 A&M loss in Manhattan. The five turnovers against FIU were the most since that same game against the Wildcats last year.
• Seventeen of FIU's 20 points came after an Aggie turnover.
• Junior Ryan Tannehill went without a catch for the first time in his career, breaking a streak of 26 straight games with at least one catch. Jeff Fuller and Cyrus Gray both had catches to increase their similar streaks to 23 games and 17, respectively.
• Jerrod Johnson increased his streak of games with at least one passing touchdown to 21 games, which is the nation's longest.
• The Aggies concluded their non-conference home schedule with a 3-0 record, and are now 66-10 against non-Southwest Conference or Big 12 opponents at Kyle Field since 1980.
Miscellaneous
• Sophomore DeAndre Thompson, from Alief Taylor HS, was the 12th Man for the first time in his career. Thompson has been a special teams stalwart already this season with four tackles, including three solo stops in the first two games.
• Texas A&M's Vice President of Student Affairs Lt. Gen. Joseph Weber and head football coach Mike Sherman hosted several Purple Heart recipients in conjunction with the Combat Marine Outdoors program. Attending the game as guests of Texas A&M were Sgt. Issac Gallegos (U.S. Marine Corps), Lt. Col. David Barnes (U.S. Marine Corps), LCpl. Franklin Powell (U.S. Marine Corps), LCpl Christopher Bryde (U.S. Marine Corps), HN Thomas Henderson (U.S. Navy), as well Combat Marines escorts Rusty Hicks and Albert Carvajal (Staff Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps).
• Receiving their Aggie Senior Rings in a team ceremony on Friday were seven current or former A&M football players: Bradley Stephens, Nick Trice, Joe Villavisencio, Roger Holland and Ty Warren.
