AUBURN, Wash. - Sophomore Cameron Peck shot a school record-tying and course record 63 on Tuesday to lead the ninth-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational at Washington National Golf Club.
Peck, whose hometown of Olympia is just miles from the course, matched the round record set just 11 days ago by Jordan Russell in Japan. He shot a bogey-free round with nine birdies, including five on the final six holes of the day.
Ironically, Peck was not the only player to shoot a 63 on Tuesday. He shared course record-setting honors with a player from the same pairing--Idaho's Jarred Bossio, who is also from Olympia. The two are friends who grew up playing junior golf together and high school golf against each other, Peck at Timberline High and Bossio at Capital High.
"Cameron put on a ball-striking clinic today," head coach J.T. Higgins said. "He made nine birdies, and the longest putt he made was eight feet. Jordan's record didn't last long and it's nice to know we have guys that can go low. I will take all the 63s I can get."
The surging Aggies closed with two of the best rounds of the tournament, shot 7-under for the day and wrapped up action with a 5-over 869 (305-283-281). Pepperdine won the tournament with a 17-under 847, while host and sixth-ranked Washington finished seven strokes back in second (-10). San Diego State (-5) was the only other team to finish under par.
"The best thing about our team is that these guys never quit," Higgins said. "They knew it would take a miracle to win the tournament, but they played every hole like we were only a shot or two behind. Because of that we had a terrific final round and a strong showing."
Idaho (+7) was two shots back of the Aggies in fifth, followed by Oregon State (+10), Missouri (+11), No. 5 Oregon (+16), Pacific (+20), UC Davis (+20), Washington State (+20), Fresno State (+24), BYU (+26) and Gonzaga (+42).
Peck, who tied for sixth with a 3-under 213 (75-75-63), broke par for the fourth consecutive tournament and the eighth time in his young career. Senior Nacho Elvira (72-72-75=218) tied for 19th at 2-over, while sophomore Case Cochran finished 26th with a 4-over 220 (77-66-77). Junior Jordan Russell (82-70-73=225) was 44th at 9-over, and junior Geoff Shaw (83-75-70=228) rounded out the team in 55th place at 12-over par. Senior Bryant Lach (85-78-83=246), playing as an individual, finished 74th overall.
Pepperdine had the top two individual finishers, with Josh Anderson winning thanks to a 10-under 206 and Andrew Putnam finishing second with a 6-under 210.
"I'm pleased we beat everyone we could beat today and posted another sub-par round," Higgins said. "If we quit shooting ourselves in the foot early, we will win some tournaments."
The Aggies have a short turnaround, as they will begin play in the prestigious PING/Golfweek Preview on Sunday at Karsten Creek in Stillwater--home of the 2011 NCAA Championships. The tournament will run through Tuesday.
