Texas A&M senior Maria Sommer earned the first Big 12 Swimmer of the Week honor of her career on Wednesday after contributing several strong swims in dual meets against No. 2 Georgia, No. 21 SMU and North Texas last weekend.
Sommer, from nearby Brenham, Texas, helped the Aggies post a 2-1 record on their road swing through the Metroplex with team victories over North Texas and SMU. Sommer posted a win in the 100-yard freestyle against North Texas (51.99) last Friday and a victory in the 50 free in the Aggies' double dual against Georgia and SMU (23.09) on Saturday. She also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke against UNT and fourth overall in the 100 free against Georgia and SMU.
Sommer swam the anchor leg in the Aggies' 200 medley relay win over the Bulldogs and Mustangs that posted an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:42.36. Sommer closed out the victory with an anchor leg split of 22.75, which was the fastest of the day. Sommer also swam the leadoff leg on the Aggies' 400 free relay that finished first against SMU and second to Georgia in a time of 3:26.23.
In other swimming news, the A&M women remained steady at No. 8 in the TYR/CSCAA Division I poll that was released on Wednesday.
