GAME PREVIEW
The No. 5 Texas A&M women's basketball team (16-1, 4-0) carries a 10-game winning streak to Ames, Iowa, where the Aggies will face the first of three top 20 opponents with the likes of 20th-ranked Iowa State (13-4, 1-2) on Saturday, Jan. 22 at Hilton Coliseum. In a game that is televised nationally on FSN, A&M and the Cyclones tipoff at 11 a.m. In what is one of their toughest stretches of the season, the Aggies came from behind to down Texas, 80-65, on Wednesday and have No. 14/13 Oklahoma and No. 1/1 Baylor looming next. The Aggies are one of just three unbeaten teams in the conference and are one of just eight teams in the nation to boast one loss or less. Six-foot-one senior and All-America candidate Tanisha Smith added 10 points for Texas A&M, Adaora Elonu had nine and Sydney Colson scored eight points and had six assists. The Cyclones struggled to get anything going and made just 15 of 50 shots as they scored their fewest points of the season. Amanda Zimmerman had nine points for the Cyclones who had only one player in double digits.
UP NEXT
Up next, the Aggies travel to travel to No. 14/13 Oklahoma for a midweek matchup on Jan. 26 against A&M's second consecutive top 20 team. Texas A&M then hosts No. 1 Baylor at Reed Arena on Sunday, Jan. 30.
A SIZZLING START
Texas A&M is off to the best start in school history, winning 16 of its first 17 games. Previously, Gary Blair's Aggies had started the season at 14-1 for three straight seasons, but the 2010-11 team is the only team in program history to start the year at 16-1.
BEST BIG 12 START
The Aggies have gotten out to its first-ever 4-0 start in Big 12 play and look for their fifth straight win against Iowa State. Previously, A&M at best, had gone 3-1 three times to start league play (2009-10, 2006-07, 2005-06).
ADAMS APPROACHING 1,000 POINTS
All-America candidate Danielle Adams is quickly approaching the 1,000-point mark of her Aggie career and coming into Saturday's game boasts 918 career points. Only 21 A&M players have ever reached this prestigious plateau. What's more is that only two players all-time have accomplished this feat in just two seasons - Jaynetta Saunders (1,024 from 1999-01) and Peggy Pope (1,010 in 1978-80).
COLSON CLOSE TO 100 ASSISTS
For the third straight year, Sydney Colson is close to registering 100+ assists in a single season. With 98 assists in 2010-11, she is on pace to shatter her assist totals from the previous two seasons (129 in 2009-10 and 106 in 2008-09). Colson has been the team leader in assists for the past two seasons and currently ranks seventh on the career list with 380 assists.
THE ASTONISHING AGGIE BENCH
The Texas A&M bench has been anything short of amazing this season. Seven players off the bench for the Aggies are shooting 42.9 percent or better, a statistic that is rarely seen. In addition, the A&M bench is collectively shooting 46.3 percent, a number that clearly leads to the Aggies' seventh-best field goal percentage in the nation of 47.4. The A&M bench has also outscored 14 of 17 opponents this season.
TEN STRAIGHT
A&M suffered its only loss of the season, a three-point setback at then-No. 5 Duke on Dec. 6, 2010. Since then, the Aggies have won 10 straight, their longest streak of the season and longest streak since the 2008-09 season when the team started the year with a school-record 12 consecutive wins. During this season's stretch the Aggies have forced their opponents to make an outstanding 25.9 turnovers per game, while just committing 12.7 - a +13.2 turnover margin. A&M is averaging 87.7 points, while averaging over 20 assists per game to its opponents' 8.8. The Aggies are also shooting over 49.2 percent from the floor. Individually, three Aggies are averaging double figures in the last 10 games, including Adams (24.4 ppg), White (14.8 ppg) and Carter (11.0 ppg). Colson is dishing out 7.2 assists per game.
ADAMS NATIONAL LEADER IN POINTS PER MINUTE
Adams is the Big 12's second-leading scorer and the nation's 10th-best leading scorer who averages 22.3 points per game, but she's also scoring efficiently as she leads the country by scoring the most points per minute. Below are Adam's points per minute, compared to the top 10 national leaders in scoring.
