    A&M/NEBRASKA RECAPS

Last Time They Met: (#23) Texas A&M 70, Nebraska 64
KANSAS CITY (March 11, 2010)--Donald Sloan scored 23 points and Bryan Davis had a key three-point play at the 1:01 mark, enabling No. 23 Texas A&M to stave off upset-minded Nebraska 70-64 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. Nebraska, trailing all game while trying to become the first No. 12 seed in Big 12 history to win two tournament games, cut the lead to 62-58 with 1:35 left on Sek Henry's 3-pointer. Davis then managed to get behind the Nebraska defense for a layup, was fouled by Jorge Brian Diaz and make the free throw to make it 65-58. In Friday's semifinals, the Aggies (23-8) get a rematch with No. 1 Kansas, which beat them last month 59-54. The Huskers (15-18), who lost all but two of their 16 regular-season conference games but beat No. 5 seed Missouri in the first round, will sit out the NCAA tournament for the 12th straight season.

    Last Year: Texas A&M 64, Nebraska 53
COLLEGE STATION (Jan. 9, 2010)--Donald Sloan scored 26 points, including several key free throws down the stretch, to give Texas A&M a 64-53 win over Nebraska in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Facing the Big 12's stingiest defense, the Aggies improved to 12-0 this season when holding teams to less than 70 points. Nebraska (12-4) led by one before Texas A&M (12-3) scored nine straight points, six on free throws by Sloan, to take a 51-43 lead with about 5 1/2 minutes remaining. The Cornhuskers cut the lead to six before a 3-pointer by A&M's Nathan Walkup with less then five minutes remaining made it 54-45, and Nebraska didn't threaten again. Nebraska was led Christian Standhardinger, a freshman from Germany, who had 13 points in his debut for the Cornhuskers.

Last Time in Lincoln: Texas A&M 57, Nebraska 55
LINCOLN (Feb. 24, 2009)--Josh Carter's buzzer-beating 3-pointer gave Texas A&M a 57-55 come-from-behind win over Nebraska. The Aggies (20-8, 6-7 Big 12) fell behind by 18 early in the second half. But Nebraska (16-10, 6-7) scored just seven points in the final 14 minutes and made just two field goals in the last 16:52. The Aggies scored 10 of the game's final 11 points. A Nebraska foul gave the Texas A&M the ball out of bounds with 2.6 seconds left. Carter received the inbounds pass and swished a 25-footer from the top of the key as time ran out. Carter led Texas A&M with 11 points and Davis had 10 for the Aggies. Ade Dagunduro led Nebraska with 16 points. Nebraska's Cookie Miller missed a pair of free throws with 19.5 seconds left and the teams each turned the ball over twice before Texas A&M got a final possession.

    GAME NOTES

    Hot Start

  • Texas A&M is off to the second-best start in school history by winning 17 of its first 19 games.
  • Only one team in school history has had a better start than this year's Aggies (17-2) ... the 1919-20 team ran the table and finished a perfect 19-0 ... A&M is off to its best start in 91 years.
  • Mark Turgeon other A&M teams were 15-4 (2007-08), 15-4 (2008-09) and 14-5 (2009-10) through their first 19 games.

    Big 12 Notables

  • The Aggies are 4-1 in Big 12 play , matching the best Big 12 start in school history ... the 2006-07 NCAA Sweet 16 squad (4-1) had the same record through 5 games ... a victory over Nebraska Saturday would keep pace with the '06-07 team for best Big 12 start in school history.
  • Texas A&M matched its best-ever finish in Big 12 play last season, tying for second place with an 11-5 record ... it was the Aggies' second-best record in league history, trailing only the 2006-07 squad (13-3) ... A&M was 7-1 at home and 4-4 on the road in conference tilts in 2010.
  • The Aggies have won 45 Big 12 games since the start of the 2007 league season ... prior to that, A&M had totaled only 43 victories in the first 10 years of Big 12 play.
  • With a win at Oklahoma on Jan. 8, Texas A&M has now won 4 of its last 5 Big 12 openers after going winless in its first 10 tries.

    Bouncing Back

  • Under Mark Turgeon, the Aggies have won 12 of their last 13 games following a loss ... A&M rebounded from a tough two-point loss to Boston College on Nov. 25 with a 29-point win over Manhattan the next day ... the Aggies never trailed in the game, and held the Jaspers to 7 points over the final 13 minutes ... on Saturday, the Aggies put a mid-week loss at Texas behind them with a hard-fought, 64-56 win over Kansas State.

    Cracking the Top 10

  • Texas A&M earned its first top-10 ranking in over three years last week, checking in at No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll (Jan. 17) ... the last time the Aggies sat in the national top 10 was on Nov. 26, 2007, when they were ranked ninth in both major polls.
  • It also marked just the fifth time in school history that a Texas A&M team has broken the top 10 in a season, joining the 1959-60, 2006-07 and 2007-08 squads ... A&M's school-record ranking in the polls is No. 6, set in the 2006-07 season.

    Road Warriors

  • The Aggies have won 11 of their last 16 games away from Reed Arena dating back to early February of last season ... three of those five losses have been by 4 points or less ... A&M's setbacks in that stretch came at No. 24 Baylor (70-66), against No. 1 Kansas in the Big 12 semifinals in Kansas City (79-66), in overtime to No. 10 Purdue in the NCAA Second Round in Spokane (63-61), on Thanksgiving Day vs Boston College (67-65) in Orlando and most recently at No. 10 Texas (81-60).

    Thirteen in a Row

  • Texas A&M rattled off 13 straight wins over just under a two-month span from Nov. 26-Jan. 15 ... the 13-game streak was the longest in 91 years and the third-longest in school history, and included wins over then No. 12 Missouri, then No. 20 Temple, then No. 21 Washington and against Arkansas on a neutral court in Dallas.

    * spanned two seasons

  • The 13-game win streak was A&M's longest since the school-record 25-game streak which spanned the 1919-20 and 1920-21 seasons ... it also was the longest in Mark Turgeon coaching career, as his 2006-07 Wichita State team won its first 11 games of the season ... it was the third time a Turgeon-coached A&M team has won at least eight straight games (13 games, 2010-11; 10 games, 2008-09; 8 games, 2007-08).
  • Over the 13-game win streak, Aggie foes averaged just under 55 points per game and were out-rebounded by a margin of 10.4 boards ... a closer look at the numbers:

Opp. Combined Record (as of 1/17) 127-88 (.591)

  • Every Aggie opponent on the 13-game streak was held under its season average (not counting overtime periods) ... in addition, only two teams on the streak shot better than their season average (Missouri and Pacific).
  • In the last 3 minutes of games on the win streak, the Aggie defense held foes to 24.2 percent shooting (16-of-66) from the field.

    Success Against Ranked Teams

  • The Aggies are 4-1 this season against ranked opponents, picking up a 54-51 win over Temple (No. 20 USAT/ESPN, No. 21 AP) on Nov. 28 at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, a 63-62 win over Washington (No. 21 AP, No. 22 USAT/ESPN) on Dec. 11 at Reed Arena, a 91-89 home victory over Missouri (No. 12 USAT/ESPN, No. 15 AP) on Jan. 15, and a 64-56 defeat of Kansas State (No. 24 USAT/ESPN) on Jan. 22 ... the Aggies' only loss came on Wednesday, 81-60, at Texas (No. 10 AP, No. 11 USAT/ESPN)
  • 2010 marked only the third time in school history that an A&M team has scored at least two regular-season wins against ranked non-conference foes ... two of the three times have come under Mark Turgeon (2009-10 and 2010-11) ... legendary coach Shelby Metcalf won 4 in the 1978-79 season.
  • Mark Turgeon is 4-2 at A&M in games against ranked non-conference opponents during the regular season ... his teams have won three straight.
  • A&M played 12 ranked teams last season and four already this year (Temple, Washington, Missouri, Texas) ... the Aggies will play 2 other games against teams ranked in the latest AP poll (Jan. 24), including Kansas (2nd) and Texas (10th).

    Protecting the Ball

  • Texas A&M has done a good job limiting turnovers of late ... over the last 7 games, the Aggies have averaged 11.1 turnovers per game (14.6 average through first 12 games) ... A&M has avoided double-digit turnovers three times this year, all coming in the last month (9 vs McNeese State, 9 vs Missouri, 8 at Texas).
  • The Aggies entered Saturday's game with Kansas State averaging 13.1 turnovers per game, but committed 13 TOs in the first half alone (a season high) ... A&M committed just four in the second half, with two of those coming in the first 2 minutes of play after the break ... the Aggies turned the ball over just twice over the game's final 18 minutes, outscoring K-State 35-24 over that span en route to an 8-point victory.

    Making a Stand

  • A&M has held 9 of its opponents under 38 percent shooting from the field ... under Turgeon, the Aggies are 50-4 (10-0 this year) when their opponent shoots under 40 percent and are 81-20 (16-1) when they make under 50 percent.
  • Only four of the Aggies' foes--Texas (58%), Missouri (52.2%), Boston College (48.9%) and A&M-Corpus Christi (46.7%)--have shot better than 42 percent in a game this year.
  • Texas A&M is 78-12 under Turgeon (16-1 this year) when opponents score under 70 points ... the high-water mark for an opponent this year is 89 points (Missouri, Jan. 15 in OT).
  • A&M faced the nation's leading scorer, Nicholls State's Anatoly Bose (25.0 PPG), on Jan. 3 ... the Aggies held Bose to just 6 points on 1-of-12 shooting ... 4 of his 6 points came from the free-throw line ... Bose had hit double figures in 23 consecutive games dating back to last year and had not scored fewer than 15 points this season ... his only field goal came with just under 17 minutes left in the game.
  • Texas A&M's defense, which had been strong all season, faced a tough test on Dec. 11 from the nation's best offense in Washington and shined brightly ... A&M held Washington, who entered the contest averaging 95.5 points per game, to a season-low 62 points ... the Aggies held the Huskies to a season-low 37.7 percent shooting (entered averaging 51.3%) ... A&M's defense allowed UW 6-of-22 (27.3%) shooting from the 3-point arc (entered averaging 47.5%) ... A&M forced Washington into a season-high 20 turnovers.

    Aggies in the NCAA Rankings

  • In the latest NCAA rankings (as of Jan. 23), A&M ranked 3rd nationally in rebounding margin (+10.4), trailing only Pitt (13.8) and Old Dominion (10.8) ... the Aggies have out-rebounded 18 of 19 opponents this season ... A&M is 81-13 under Turgeon (17-1 this year) when matching or out-rebounding their foes.
  • A&M also ranked 10th in the country in scoring defense (58.8 ppg) ... Stephen F. Austin, whom the Aggies beat at Reed Arena on Dec. 2, leads the nation (54.0).
  • At the statistical release, the Aggies were holding opponents to 39.9 percent shooting, which ranks 44th nationally ... A&M ranks 20th nationally in 3-point field goal defense, with foes shooting just 29.7 percent from behind the arc.

Cashing in From the Charity Stripe

  • Texas A&M is shooting 72.4 percent from the free-throw line this season, second-best in the Big 12 (Colorado, 78.3) ... that puts the Aggies on track for the fourth-best free-throw percentage in school history and best in 33 years, trailing only the 1967-68 (74.4), 1977-78 (72.8) and 1962-63 (72.8) teams.
  • A&M has shot 70 percent or better from the charity stripe in 12 of 19 games this season ... the low-water mark for the team this year is a 59-percent showing at Texas (10-for-17) ... by comparison, last season A&M shot 66.1 percent from the line and shot 70% or better 13 times in 34 games.

    Knocking 'em Down

  • Texas A&M has shot 50 percent or better from the floor in 4 games this year, but 2 of those outings have come in January ... over the first 13 games of the schedule, the Aggies shot 44.8 percent from the floor and 34 percent from 3-point range, while making over half their shots against A&M-Corpus Christi (51.7) and Wagner (52.6) ... since the calendar flipped to 2011 (5 games), the Aggies have shot 46 percent from the floor and 39 percent from 3-point land ... A&M's 50-percent plus outings this month came in wins over Nicholls State (50.0) and Oklahoma (54.3).

    Locking it Down

  • The Aggies have used quite a few key defensive showings en route to a 17-2 start ... a look at some of the defensive efforts that have led to victories so far this season:

    Senior Watch

  • A&M's senior class needs 11 more wins to become the winningest class in school history ... it is just the fourth class in school history to total at least 90 victories ... the Class of 2011 is 90-33 (.732) entering Saturday's game at Nebraska, trailing only the 2010 (100-38, .725), 2009 (98-37, .726) and 2008 (95-37, .720) classes in the record books.
  • An NCAA bid would make the 2011 seniors just the third class in school history to advance to four NCAA Tournaments, joining those from the Classes of 2009 and 2010.

    Elite Poll Company

  • Texas A&M (No. 19 football, No. 13 basketball) is one of only THREE schools nationally to be ranked in the top 20 in the latest AP poll in both football and men's hoops ... Ohio State (#1 MBB/#5 FB) and Missouri (#11 MBB/#18 FB) are the others.
  • A&M (No. 19 football, No. 13 MBB, No. 6 WBB) is the ONLY school to be ranked in the top 20 in the latest AP poll in football, men's basketball and women's basketball.

    Balancing Act

  • The loss of A&M's top three scorers from last year (B.J. Holmes (9.2).
  • A total of 9 players have combined for 59 double-figure outings (Middleton 16, Holmes 10, Walkup 10, Loubeau 9, Hibbert 6, Roberson 5, Turner 1, Harris 1, Lewis 1) through 19 games.

    Reed Arena Struggles for Foes

  • A&M is 12-0 at home this year, a feat due in no small part to the Aggies' defensive effort all season long ... opponents are shooting just 38.7 percent inside Reed and averaging 57.9 points per game.
  • Only 3 teams have shot better than 40 percent on A&M's home floor--Missouri (52.2), McNeese State (41.8) and Pacific (41.4).
  • Only 3 teams have scored more than 60 points on A&M's home floor--Missouri (89 in OT), Prairie View A&M (63) and Washington (62).

    Home, Sweet Home

  • A&M has won 30 of its last 31 home games, including 13 of its last 14 in Big 12 play ... the Aggies are 43-3 at home since the start of the 2008-09 season with a 16-3 mark in conference games.
  • The Aggies are 77-6 (.928) at home since the start of the 2006-07 season and are 109-12 (.901) since the start of the 2004-05 campaign.
  • A&M has won 25 straight home games against unranked opponents (9 straight in Big 12 play) ... under Turgeon, the Aggies are 48-3 against unranked opponents at Reed Arena, including a 13-3 mark against unranked Big 12 teams.
  • The Aggies are the only Big 12 team to win at least 15 home games for the last six consecutive seasons.
  • A&M is 151-54 (.737) in its 13th season at Reed Arena ... the Aggies were 41-41 the first six years at Reed and are 110-13 since.

    LAST TIME OUT: (#10) Texas A&M 64, (#24) Kansas State 56

COLLEGE STATION (Jan. 22)--Minutes after Texas A&M was manhandled in an 81-60 loss to Texas earlier in the week, coach Mark Turgeon told the 11th-ranked Aggies they'd have to be much more physical to beat Kansas State. Texas A&M answered his challenge, outmuscling Kansas State in a game with 48 fouls to win 64-56 on Saturday. B.J. Holmes made a pair of free throws with 45 seconds left before Jacob Pullen's shot was blocked by David Loubeau on the other end and the Wildcats had to foul again. Dash Harris made one of two shots to push the lead to 58-53, and the Aggies got the rebound on the miss. Middleton hit six free throws after that to secure the win. It was the fourth loss in five games for Kansas State (13-7, 1-4), which was led by Pullen's 21 points. Curtis Kelly added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, off to a terrible start in Big 12 play after being the preseason conference favorite. The Aggies bounced back from the loss to No. 10 Texas, which was their first defeat since Thanksgiving. Texas A&M's free throw shooting was the key in this one with the Aggies making 27 of 37 attempts compared to 11-of-19 shooting from the line for the Wildcats. Middleton led the way in that area, sinking 11 of 12. Middleton was the only Aggies player who scored in double figures, but Holmes, Naji Hibbert and Kourtney Roberson chipped in nine points apiece for Texas A&M. The game was tied at 48 before the Aggies used a 7-2 run to make it 55-50 with just under 1 1/2 minutes left. Pullen got Kansas State within 46-45 with a jump shot with about 10 minutes remaining. Both teams went on scoring droughts after that, with neither one making a field goal for about 5 minutes. The Wildcats tied it on a free throw by Kelly with about 7 minutes left. Harris hit a layup with just more than 5 minutes remaining to break the drought and give the Aggies a 48-46 lead. Kansas State led by six before Texas A&M used a 13-0 run to pull ahead 44-37 with 12 minutes to go. That run was fueled by a pair of 3-pointers by Hibbert that came 5 seconds apart. Hibbert hit one from the left corner before a turnover by the Wildcats gave the Aggies the ball back. He caught the inbounds pass and knocked down a second one from the right corner. The Aggies were up by six after a 3-pointer by Hibbert with about 4 minutes left in the first half. The Wildcats finished the half with a 7-1 run to leave it tied 29-all at the break.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Turgeon: "That's a really good win for us. I thought Kansas State played well. Defensively, I thought they were really dialed in, they did a great job guarding us. We didn't particularly play well, to be honest, especially offensively. It's an ugly win, but in the end it's a 'W.' I don't think we're very good (right now), I really don't. I'm sitting over there thinking we have a long ways to go. And I think that's the exciting thing about where we are, we're not playing very well. We're making a lot of mistakes, we have a lot of silly fouls. The way we're playing right now is not good enough. That just shows you how good I think that group in there can be. I'm proud of the bench, I thought they were really good today and had a big impact on the game. We talked about just getting back to playing Texas A&M basketball, and our guys know what that is. If our bigs, Kourtney and Ray, come along, then our team will really improve."

    TURGEON QUOTEBOARD (1/24 press conference)

On the success at the free throw line...
"Well, it was kind of a roller coaster on Saturday because we missed three front ends of 1-and-1s. We were just good enough defensively to overcome it. But no, I think the right guys got fouled late. It was good to see B.J. (Holmes) step up and knock them down like he did, and of course Khris (Middleton) has done it most of the year. In the league we have about four guys shooting real well at the foul line and three to four that aren't. We've got to get those three or four that aren't at a little higher percentage as we go forward. It's kind of an individual thing, but I think we're at 72 or 73 (percent) both overall and in the league, and that's better than we have been in the past."

On the practice plan this week with no Wednesday game...
"Well, we'll work on defense, that's what we do. We don't win the game Saturday without good defense in the second half. I thought Dash (Harris) did a tremendous job. Our team defense was better and our rebounding was better. So we'll work on that. We've got to work on our execution. The good thing is we've got a lot of practice time this week. We've got two days this week where we'll just work on us, just get better and work on them individually. We'll start preparing for Nebraska Thursday and Friday. We'll always start on the defensive end and rebounding, and then we just have to get where we start executing better and screening better offensively. We'll tweak a few things to hopefully help that."

On Saturday being last trip to the Devaney Center, and his memories of the place...
"Well, obviously our last game up there was a thriller, with Josh (Carter) hitting the shot to beat them. (It was) A game that quite frankly we weren't very good for about 30 minutes and then were great the last 10 minutes, and it was enough to overcome I think an 18-point deficit. We had great execution down the stretch and Josh hit a big three. You think about where our program's come since that game and what we've done in the league. That was a big game for us. I think we ended up winning three in a row in the league after that, and 11 last year, and of course where we are today. That was a big shot for us. The thing I always know about Nebraska is they have great fans, it'll be sold out I'm sure. They really like their Cornhuskers. I won't miss going there, but I'm looking forward to this last time."

Do you expect to get Nebraska's best shot defensively after their loss to Texas Tech?
"Yeah, (Coach Sadler) and I probably feel about the same about our teams defensively right now. Doc's team is going to guard. They always guard. They have a week to get ready, just like we do, so they'll fine-tune some things defensively. They're going to make you beat them from the outside. They're going to pack it in and we're going to have to make some jump shots to beat them. We understand that. Hopefully with having the weekday off we'll be fresh, our legs will be fresh, and we'll be able to knock down some shots on Saturday."

On the challenge posed by Nebraska...
"I think they have more quality depth than they've had, more experience than they've had. They had young depth last year and they're a little more experienced this year. They're a heck of a team, probably undefeated at home--I haven't looked, but I'm sure they are. Like any Big 12 road game it's going to be a tough one."

On the bench being key in Saturday's win over K-State and if that builds confidence...
"No question (it does). I was really pleased. Naji (Hibbert) has been giving us good minutes. He's played well in I think four of the five Big 12 Conference games, which shows he's getting more consistent, which is something I'm on him about. He shot it well. Kourtney (Roberson) had his best game in a while. Kourtney is a good player and he needs minutes. I thought Keith Davis, in his three minutes, was really good. (He was) 1-for-1 from the field, he screened well, he defended well. And then Ray (Turner) was playing well before he got hurt and got in foul trouble. Ray would have played a lot more minutes Saturday, but he just couldn't. His ankle was bothering him, and we needed him. To see the way our starters shot the ball and to still win the game, it's encouraging. We want to build depth, hopefully what gives us a chance to be near the top of the league is building depth. That makes you a better team when guys don't play well, because you have options. It's a good feeling to sit there on the bench and watch Kourtney play the way he's playing, instead of putting him in for two or three minutes and just trying to get through those two or three minutes and get the starters back in. That's no fun as a coach. You want to be able to sit over there when you sub guys in and feel comfortable with them. And I think we're getting to that point."

On the basketball weekend ahead at Reed Arena, with Big Monday versus Texas and the No. 5 women Sunday versus No. 1 Baylor...
"Hopefully it's a great 36 hours. What (women's coach) Gary (Blair) and his staff have done with their program...to win at Iowa State the way they did, which wasn't an easy environment--I was able to watch part of that game--they deserve a huge crowd Sunday against the No. 1 team in the country. It should be an exciting time. Then of course with us playing Texas on big Monday, it should be great crowd and bring a lot of students out. Hopefully we'll get the students out for the women's game Sunday also. I think that's pretty important. I've watched a lot of teams, and obviously Texas is playing as well as anyone in the country right now. And Baylor on the women's side has proven how good they are. Hopefully it's a great 36 hours for A&M basketball."

When you see what Texas did to Kansas, do you reevaluate what happened to you in Austin on Wednesday?
"No. the one thing about down in Texas was I thought we kept trying hard, we just couldn't do anything about it. That was the discouraging part. I don't compare ourselves to anyone else, I just want to figure it out. But no, what a week for Texas...to beat us the way they did and play the way they did, and then come back and beat Kansas pretty handily, that's a pretty good week."

On such a quick turnaround of playing Texas on Monday, less than two weeks from the first meeting...
"I think it's good, because we'll remember the whipping we took. You don't ever want to get embarrassed. They whipped us pretty good. I think we cut it to 14 in the second half...we were trying, we just couldn't do anything about it. That'll help us. And then game-planning wise, having to go to Nebraska (Saturday) and then play on Big Monday, it'll help your planning. You just went through it all, hopefully you can make the right adjustments to be a little more successful."
