Five Aggies Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team

IRVING, Texas - Five Aggies were among 46 student-athletes honored to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, the league office announced.

Senior Maryann Baker (Dallas, Texas) and junior Kelsey Assarian (Naples, Fla.) were named to the first team, while senior Catherine Snow (Temple, Texas), junior Adaora Elonu (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Cierra Windham (Corona, Calif.) earned second team recognition.

Baker and Assarian each earned a spot on the first team for the second straight year. Baker holds a 3.504 GPA as a sport management major and has received the Team Academic Award the past two seasons. With a 3.372 GPA, Assarian is majoring in supply chain management. Elonu made her second consecutive appearance on the second team with a 3.010 GPA as an allied health major, while Snow and Windham garnered their first career nod on the second team with spring/fall 2010 GPA's of 3.00. Snow is a sport management major and Windham is a general studies major.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the women's basketball academic all-league squad consisted of 30 first team members combined with 16 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The No. 5 Aggies return to action on Saturday, Feb. 19 against Oklahoma State. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Reed Arena. The NCAA "Pack the House" Challenge is set for Saturday in which A&M competes against schools in the Big 12 for a chance to be the 2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Pack the House Challenge Champion and win great prizes. Two kids get in free to the game with any adult ticket purchase.
