GAME PREVIEW
In search of its 10th consecutive win against in-state rival Texas (17-10, 6-7), the No. 5 Texas A&M women's basketball team (23-3, 11-2) heads to Austin on Sunday, Feb. 27 for the second installment of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. Tipoff between the Aggies and the Longhorns begins at 2 p.m. (CT) at the Frank Erwin Center and is televised nationally on Fox Sports Net. Like any meeting between A&M and UT, be it on the gridiron, court or diamond, it is an emotionally-charged event that both programs look forward to each season. In basketball, there are two chances to earn a half point toward the showdown standings and the Aggie women have dropped only 1.5 points (three games) to Texas since the sponsored rivalry series first began during the 2004-05 campaign. The Aggies are currently on a two-game winning streak with home victories over Oklahoma State (76-67) and Texas Tech (84-60). A&M is in second place in the Big 12 Conference standings and just a game back from first-place and No. 3 Baylor. The Longhorns are tied for sixth place and look to make a strong regular season finish for seeding in the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship and to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
ON THE TUBE
Texas A&M will appear on the tube before a television audience for the eighth time this season. SCOUTING TEXAS
Texas enters Sunday's match on a two-game losing streak, falling at No. 14 Oklahoma (62-91) and at No. 23 Iowa State (57-66). The Longhorns are looking for that signature win as they face their third straight top 25 team. UT has managed just one win against a ranked opponent this season back on Jan. 26 against No. 25 Texas Tech (75-67). Texas is 10-3 at home, including a 4-2 record at the Frank Erwin Center in conference play. The team's leading scorer, Chassidy Fussell, averages 17.2 point per game, and four Longhorns are scoring in double figures including 6-foot-2 guard Kathleen Nash (14.1 ppg), Ashleigh Fontenette (11.9 ppg) and Yvonne Anderson (11.1 ppg). Nash leads the team with 7.9 rebounds while 6-foot-4 junior Ashley Gayle is averaging 3.6 blocks and 7.1 rebounds per game. In her fourth year as Texas head coach, Gail Goestenkors is 82-46 (.641), but has never defeated the Aggies in nine previous tries.
PROBABLE STARTING LINEUPS
TEXAS A&M
No. Name 2010-11 Stats
51 Takia Starks to tally the most points of any A&M women's basketball player in two consecutive seasons. Starks previously held that mark with 1,141 points from 2007-09. What's more, is Adams will register the most points of any A&M women's basketball player in a single season and most likely against Texas. With 607 points this year, Adams needs just five more to surpass Jaynetta Saunders (611 pts in 2000-01) to become the single-season record holder in total points. Adams also needs 17 points to crack the top 10 in career points at A&M.
RPI RATINGS
As March Madness quickly approaches, the NCAA Women's Basketball RPI becomes more and more important for seeding in the NCAA Tournament. In the NCAA's most recent RPI release (Feb. 21), Texas A&M ranks sixth behind Connecticut, Tennessee, Duke, Baylor and Stanford. Oklahoma (21st) is the only other Big 12 team in the top 25. With its win against Baylor, Texas Tech jumped from 40th to 27th.
IN THE NATIONAL POLLS
The Aggies started the season with their highest-ever preseason ranking at No. 8 in both the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. This week, A&M remained at No. 5 in the AP Poll for the second straight week and remained at No. 5 in the Coaches' Poll for the third consecutive week. A&M has now been ranked in the Coaches Poll for 95 consecutive weeks and 49 all-time in the top 10. A&M has been ranked for 62 consecutive weeks in the AP poll and 41 all-time in the top 10. Fifth is the highest ranking the Aggies have achieved this season.
