About Texas Tech (13-17, 5-10)

  • Texas Tech is 13-17 on the year and is in 10th place in the Big 12 at 5-10 ... the Red Raiders have split their last 4 Big 12 games, winning at Baylor (78-69) and most recently over Oklahoma (84-58) in Lubbock ... Tech's losses in that span came to Colorado and at Oklahoma State by a combined 5 points ... TTU is 2-10 away from home this year.
  • Texas Tech returns 3 starters from a 2009-10 team that finished 19-16 and 4-12 in the Big 12 ... the Red Raiders advanced to the NIT quarterfinals last year, their first postseason berth since 2007 ... Pat Knight is in his fourth year as the head coach in Lubbock with an overall record of 50-59.

    Series Notes

  • Texas Tech leads the series, 63-59, that dates back to 1942 ... the Aggies, however, have won 3 straight and 9 of the last 13 ... Tech's last victory in the series came in the 2009 Big 12 Tournament, 88-83, in Kansas City.
  • The Aggies hold a 35-21 edge in College Station and an 8-4 advantage at Reed Arena ... A&M has won the last 3 at Reed.
  • A&M has claimed the last 6 regular-season meetings between the schools, including a 3-point win earlier this month in Lubbock ... the Aggies got 16 points from Khris Middleton and erased a second-half deficit en route to a 70-67 victory.

    A&M/TECH RECAPS

Earlier This Year: (#22) Texas A&M 70, Texas Tech 67
LUBBOCK (Feb. 12)--Mark Turgeon knew his team was tired after playing three games in 10 days, so he was grateful for the fortitude shown by No. 22 Texas A&M as it gutted out a 70-67 win over Texas Tech on Saturday. B.J. Holmes hit two free throws to give the Aggies a 70-67 lead and 3-point tries by Brad Reese and John Roberson missed their mark. The Aggies outrebounded Texas Tech 34-27 and got nearly half their points inside. Holmes added 14 points for A&M (19-5, 6-4). Reese scored 18 points to lead Texas Tech (11-14, 3-7). Texas A&M had lost four of its last five games before pulling out a win in overtime at Colorado on Wednesday. The Aggies scored seven straight points to start the second half, going up 46-37. Texas Tech came back with 9-2 run, including four points by Reese, a basket by Jaye Crockett and a 3-pointer by David Tairu to pull within 48-46. The Red Raiders regained the lead, which they relinquished late in the first half, on a layup and a free throw by Roberts to go up 50-48. Middleton tied it at 54 on a layup and put them ahead on a jumper on their next possession to give the Aggies a 56-54 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining. Texas Tech pulled ahead 65-63 with 3:33 remaining when Roberson hit a 3, but a few minutes later he had the ball stolen by Dash Harris who got the basket to make it 67-65 and put the Aggies up for good. Mike Singletary, the Red Raiders' leading scorer, played just 4 minutes because of a calf problem that Knight said he didn't know about before the game. The Aggies led 39-37 at halftime.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Turgeon: "I was really proud of our guys today. I thought we had a really tough week, we lost three straight and then come and play on Saturday and I was concerned about our energy level. We were going to need a great bench today and we did. Tech played great made a lot of tough shots, played with great toughness, and neither team could make a free-throw down the stretch. I thought D'walyn Roberts was great rebounding, and Crockett really helped them. We just went to David (Loubeau) and he tied the game for us. If we could've made some free throws, it would've really helped us out, and it wouldn't have been so close. However, we didn't. We've been in the same position the last two weeks with nine seconds to go and up by three. But it showed great toughness by our guys because we got off to a weak start and willed ourselves back in it. Texas Tech has been playing hard. You have to throw the Texas games out the window because Texas is so good right now, and Kansas came in and got them, but they are 3-3 on the rest of us, and every film I've watch they've played better and played harder. You can see the effort in the seniors. I knew this was going to be a tough game. I knew we were going to have to play well to beat them and we did. There is a lot of fight in that Tech team and when you play Texas twice and Kansas early that's hard. It hurts your confidence when you play good teams like that."

Last Time at Reed: Texas A&M 85, Texas Tech 70
COLLEGE STATION (Jan. 30, 2010)--Donald Sloan scored 28 points and Texas A&M beat Texas Tech 85-70. The win is A&M's 15th straight at home and leaves the Red Raiders (14-7, 2-5 Big 12) winless on the road in conference play. Texas A&M (15-6, 4-3) trailed for most of the first half but led the entire second half. The Aggies led by 11 before a wild sequence with about 1 1/2 minutes remaining that included four quick points off two steals, the second of which left Tech's leading scorer Mike Singletary on the court injured. Singletary was hurt while fighting for a ball with Bryan Davis. Play continued with Sloan finishing the fast break with a layup while Tech coach Pat Knight yelled at the officials to stop play so he could attend to his player. Singletary was escorted to the locker room holding his right shoulder and grimacing after being looked at for a couple of minutes.

    GAME NOTES

  • WITH A LOSS TO TECH AND A K-STATE LOSS TO IOWA STATE: Texas A&M would be the No. 3 seed.

    Emerging Big 12 Power

  • Texas A&M opened the 2009 Big 12 campaign with a 3-7 record ... from that point on (starting with an 81-66 win over Texas on Feb. 16 of that year), the Aggies have posted a 26-11 Big 12 record (6-0 to close 2009, 11-5 in 2010 and 9-6 in 2011) ... it's the second-best record over that span among conference teams, trailing only Kansas (33-4).

    Senior Watch

  • A&M's senior class needs 6 more wins to become the winningest class in school history ... the Class of 2011 matched the Class of '08 (95-37, .720) with victory No. 95 against Oklahoma (Feb. 23) ... it is just the fourth class in school history to total at least 90 victories ... the Class of 2011 is 95-38 (.714) entering Saturday's game against Texas Tech, trailing only the 2010 (100-38, .725), and 2009 (98-37, .726) classes in the record books.
  • An NCAA bid would make the 2011 seniors just the third class in school history to advance to four NCAA Tournaments, joining those from the Classes of 2009 and 2010.

    Balancing Act

  • The loss of A&M's top three scorers from last year (B.J. Holmes (9.6) and Nathan Walkup (9.5).
  • A total of 9 players have combined for 86 double-figure outings (Middleton 24, Holmes 16, Walkup 15, Loubeau 15, Hibbert 6, Roberson 6, Harris 2, Turner 1, Lewis 1) through 29 games.

    Cracking the Top 10

  • Texas A&M earned its first top-10 ranking in over three years this month, checking in at No. 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll (Jan. 17) ... the last time the Aggies sat in the national top 10 was on Nov. 26, 2007, when they were ranked ninth in both major polls.
  • It also marked just the fifth time in school history that a Texas A&M team has broken the top 10 in a season, joining the 1959-60, 2006-07 and 2007-08 squads ... A&M's school-record ranking in the polls is No. 6, set in the 2006-07 season.

    Up Next

  • Texas A&M has locked up a first-round bye in next week's Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in Kansas City (March 9-12) ... the Aggies' first game will be on Thursday at a time to be determined.

    LAST TIME OUT: (#2) Kansas 64, (#22) Texas A&M 51
LAWRENCE, Kan. (March 2)--Marcus and Markieff Morris both scored 13 points to lead No. 2 Kansas to a 64-51 victory over No. 22 Texas A&M and at least a share of the Big 12 title Wednesday night. Tyrell Reed had 12 points and Brady Morningstar added nine and both played significant roles as the Jayhawks (28-2, 13-2) pulled away in the second half. B.J. Holmes canned a free throw and drilled a 3-pointer. But Elijah Johnson's basket gave the Jayhawks a 45-41 lead and got them rolling on a take-charge 13-2 run en route to their 17th win in 18 games against Texas A&M. Holmes had 10 points for the Aggies and Khris Middleton added nine. The Jayhawks, who entered the game leading the nation with a 52.3 shooting percentage, missed 14 of their first 18 shots and had to heat up in the final 5 minutes to take a 29-24 halftime lead. They shot 45 percent for the game.

Texas A&M Head Coach Mark Turgeon: "I thought we were pretty good for about 30 minutes, especially defensively, and then our turnovers did us in. We had too many turnovers that turned into bad transition baskets. They had about four open looks in the second half and they made every one of them. A lot of teams aren't capable of doing that, and they drained them. We didn't play smart in a couple stretches, and a team like Kansas will make you pay. We just didn't take care of the ball and that was the defense. There is no really easy way to guard KU. We just tried to change it up. I thought our post guys did a really good job not letting them in for layups. Then they missed some shots that they normally make. Sometimes you want Senior Night to go so well that they don't play as well as they're capable of playing. I thought we were very physical and the refs really let us play, which helped us. I think to get where we want to be, we eventually need to beat a team like Kansas. We haven't been able to do it. We can't play for 30 minutes and expect to beat a good team. You have to stay focused for 40. Hopefully we can learn from it and get better. I was proud of our guys."
