SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Texas A&M begins the outdoor track and field season this weekend by competing in the San Diego State Aztec Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The only event the Aggies contest on Friday afternoon will be the men's hammer throw at San Diego Mesa College with the trio of Landon Hartwick, Cole Knuth and Casey Strong.

The Invitational portion of the meet will take place on Saturday, with the first event involving A&M athletes being the women's javelin at 10 a.m. (PDT). Other teams competing in the Aztec Invitational include BYU, Cal State Northridge, Kansas State, Long Beach State, Northern Illinois, Prairie View A&M, Wisconsin, UCLA and Division II power Western State.

Texas A&M enters the outdoor season as two-time defending men's and women's NCAA team champions. Pre-season rankings for the 2011 outdoor season will be released next week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Competing for the first time since last season for the Aggies are the javelin throwers, which includes Sam Humphreys, the 2010 Big 12 champion who also placed fifth in the NCAA Championships. Joining Humphreys, who set the school record with a 251-8 effort in 2010, are Jon Gomez and Matthew Hightower.

Emalie Humphreys placed 19th in the javelin at the 2010 NCAA meet after throwing a career best of 169-10 to qualify for the national meet. She will lead an A&M crew of javelin throwers that includes Lauren Berg, Kelly Czumble and Bonnie Richardson.

Another Aggie javelin thrower, Laura Asimakis, will contest the pole vault this weekend along with Aly Daily. In the men's vault A&M will have Dustin Phillips and Colton Sandman. Jill Hydrick will make her Aggie debut in the discus.

Distance runners will focus on the 3,000 meters in this meet with a crew of C.J. Brown, MacLean O'Donnell competing.

In the middle distance group the 800 meters will feature Hillary Hagan, Aliese Hyde, Erica Parker, James Bonn and Sam Mutschler. Michael Preble, Oscar Ramirez, Joey Roberts and Carlyle Roudette will contest the 400 meters.

The bulk of the Aggie sprinters will focus on the 100 and 200 as well as both the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. In the 100 hurdles A&M will have a trio of Donique' Flemings and Wayne Davis II and William Markert run in the 110 hurdles while Seth Mabry competes in the 400 hurdles.

Aggie jumpers in the meet include Sasha-Kay Matthias and Tiffany Peters.
