INDIANAPOLIS - Texas A&M senior Danielle Adams was selected to the 2011 NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team and junior Tyra White was a State Farm Coaches' All-America Team Honorable Mention as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and State Farm on Saturday.
The 10-member team that included Adams (Kansas City, Mo.) was decided from a group of 40 finalists by the selection committee at an in-person meeting held during the 2011 WBCA National Convention.
The 6-foot-1 combination forward/center is now Texas A&M's first State Farm (formerly Kodak) All-American, first AP First Team All-American and first USBWA All-American. Adams earned the award after leading the Aggies with 22.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game to a school-record 31 wins and their first Final Four appearance in program history. She is now a two-time State Farm All-American after being named honorable mention last year.
"I came out of junior college a two-time all-American and it was a goal for me to make this team," Adams said. "Just being here and receiving this honor is truly a blessing for me. I owe it all to God, my teammates and the coaching staff for getting me to this point."
Also a product of Kansas City, Mo., White received the honorable mention recognition from the WBCA and State Farm for the first time in her career. The six-foot guard boasts 1,027 career points and was the 23rd Aggie player to reach 1,000 points in her career. She is the team's second-leading scorer (13.7 ppg) and holds A&M's best 3-point (39%) and overall field goal percentages (49%).
WBCA CEO Beth Bass talked about the selection committee and the process for choosing the All-America team.
"The coaches who were selected by their peers to choose this year's State Farm Coaches' All-America Team debated for one-and-a-half days, which is the longest deliberation I can recall in my 15 years with this organization," she said. "Their commitment and hard work is a testament to the forethought, conscientiousness and professionalism of the committee. Because of their effort I know, without a doubt, that these 10 players are the best in women's basketball for 2011 and are truly deserving of this great honor."
Adams, White and the rest of the Aggies play their first Final Four game in program history on Sunday, April 3 at 6:06 p.m. at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. The contest is televised nationally on ESPN and ESPNHD.
