COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Sophomore All American Meagan May of the Texas A&M softball team has accepted an invitation to the USA Softball Women's National Team (WNT) Selection Camp to take place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., June 12-17, the national governing body announced Wednesday.
May was one of nine athletes who recently accepted an invitation to the camp and will join the twelve players previously selected on March 16. The Spring, Texas, native will be one of six representing the Big 12 in Chula Vista. Approximately 17 athletes chosen for the USA Softball roster from the selection camp pool in June will participate in over seven different events in four countries.
The 2011 USA Softball team will make four stops in the US, playing in the World Cup of Softball IV, July 21-25, in Oklahoma City, Okla., as well as tour destinations in Salem, Va., Bowie, Md. and Tampa, Fla. The team will vie for its eighth Pan American Championship title at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, Oct. 17-23. For more information on USA Softball, go to www.usasoftball.com.
May was named to the 2010 USA Softball Women's Futures National Team until a June 27 car accident cut her season short. She was also selected to the 2010 All-America second team as a freshman after breaking the A&M and Big 12 softball records for home runs in a season with 24 bombs. May was twice named Big 12 Player of the Week and garnered All-Big 12 first team and Big 12 All-Tournament team honors in 2010. This season, the sophomore catcher hit .349, slugging 10 home runs and adding six doubles and a triple in 30 hits while picking up 40 RBI before fracturing her right middle finger during a March 23 game.
