COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M women's tennis signee Sun Wen is the No. 1 ranked player in the nation in the final 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rankings, released late Monday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Wen, a sophomore from Dalian, China, was the Flight 1 national champion in singles at the 2011 NJCAA Division I National Championship earlier this month in Tucson, Ariz., and helped lead Tyler Junior College to its second consecutive NJCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship and a No. 1 final team ranking.
As a freshman, Wen earned All-America honors in singles and was named the 2010 ITA Region II Rookie of the Year after winning the NJCAA Flight 2 singles national title and leading TJC to its 14th team national championship trophy.
Wen, who long-time Lady Apache tennis coach John Peterson describes as possibly the best player to ever play for Tyler Junior College, was the regional and national champion in both singles and doubles at the 2010 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships last fall.
Before joining the Lady Apache squad, Wen qualified for the $25,000 Qian Shan (China) in 2008, as well as the $10,000 Goyang (South Korea) and the $10,000 Gimhae (South Korea).
Wen will be a junior this fall when she joins the Aggies, who went 15-9 this season and made a 12th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship earlier this month.
