ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Shea Groom, a 2011 Texas A&M soccer signee, netted the game-winning goal with one second left in overtime to give the Liberty High School Bluejays a Missouri Class III state soccer championship for the second year in-a-row.
Liberty trailed Ursuline Academy by one until the final few minutes of the match when Groom sunk a goal with 3:28 left in regulation to take the game into overtime in a 1-1 draw. With one second left in the overtime period, the high school senior kicked the Bluejays' second and final goal for the win.
"This is definitely the top," Groom said. "We had a rough season coming in. So much expectations and I think coming here for a second year in-a-row, with all the pressure on our backs, we just knew we had a job to do. We knew we were the best team in the state. I've never felt so calm in my life and I knew I just had to put it away."
The forward was awarded the Gatorade Missouri State Player of the Year title for the second-consecutive season last month. She will join the Aggie soccer roster this fall, along with 10 other recent high school graduates who collectively rank among the top soccer signing classes in the country.
The Texas A&M soccer team will kick off the 2011 season Aug. 13 with an exhibition match at Central Florida before returning home for the Maroon and White game Aug. 15. The Aggies' official home and season opener will be Aug. 19 against Fresno State at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. For more information on Texas A&M soccer, log on to AggieAthletics.com.
